Looking for a gunsmith for a friend.
He has a Browning A-bolt 7mm Rem Mag,
Factory rifle in a wood stock.
he’d like to get a New barrel chambered in the same cartridge, new trigger, & new synthetic stock. Using his factory action.
Any smith recommendations?
He’s finding that nobody wants to work on a Browning.
Thanks for any leads & contacts.

Man he probably doesn't want to hear this but selling it, and gathering components for a well thought out build is going to be a way better option.
Once you buy a stock, trigger, and barrel its not much more to sell the Browning and buy a custom action like a Bighorn Origin, or Defiance Tenacity.

He may weigh that option as well I’m sure.

I pulled my Browning abolt medallion 7 mag out and started messing with the Boss on it again. I replaced my stock trigger spring with an M-Carbo spring and it made a world of difference. Much lighter pull than stock. But I too am looking for an aftermarket stock. Not much outthere.

I am currently getting my A-bolt rebarreled by Garret Preece aka (Preece precision) in Ogden Utah. He has done a few A bolts and has no issues with them. If you care, I am going with a 22” proof sendero lite in 6mm creed. Pretty stoked

Oaks, if you don't mind me asking, what stock are you going to use with that profile? I too was considering a rebarrel but finding a smith to do it was step 1 (obviously you found one) and step 2 was a replacement stock.

Great question, the plan was to run a Mcmillian but as of Jan 1st they no longer inlet for the Brownings. I did not get a clear answer as to why. The guy on the other end of the phone gave me a few contacts that will inlet a flat top stock but that will basically double the cost!! The two guys that Mcmillan gave me numbers for said they would need to paint the stock, I would rather have a molded in carbon.

So, as of right now Pendleton gunstocks will do it, I like the Long range hunter stock they make and I may go that way. If nothing else Bell and Carlson has a Tactical Varmint style stock for the A-Bolt, it looks like it will be a good fit. Then I can order a Mcmillan and have it inlet down the road if I decide to go that way.

I would love to get an Altera arms stock fit up. Let me know what you find out. I think there would be a lot of guys building on browning if there were a little better support out there for them.

This is the Bell and Carlson stock, im not sure how much I will like it but it seems like a decent option

I too saw that B&C but if I remember it's for short action only. I have a medallion 7mag. So wont work for me.

Boy I got lucky. I did not know McMillian quit making Browning stocks. I would think it is all computer CNC so just push a button as they say.
Pac Nor is installing a new barrel for me as we speak. I bought a McMillian Hunter a few years ago. The project got delayed but I have all the parts once the barrelled action comes back.

Can get your straightened out. Jeff builds on all sorts of actions, GAP stopping doing the winchesters, rugers, ex... and send them to him.

I just did an Abolt last month and the action is so thin in the tenon area that I was scared tearing it down. They have a couple different thread pitches and are basically a bastard in every way.

With that said, if you can find a small custom Smith who'll inlet for you, it's not a tough job.....but it takes time.

The only way I'll touch an Abolt is knowing up front if it cracks during tearing it down.....its not my fault.

Thought I would give yall an update. I have ordered a Mcmillan A3-Sporter and when it gets here will be sending it off to Kevin Weaver, in Colorado, to inlet and bed my barreld action. Mcmillan recomended him and after discussing my project with him he sounds like the best option and very capable and has done plenty of Browning A-bolts.

Would love to hear and see an update of your project @Therealmccoy

IMG_20211111_203253756.jpgGot it back in September. It is a 300rum on an Abolt II action. Started as a 300 Win. I loaded 50 light 168gr rounds to break it in. That is all I have had time to shoot through it. I will have to wait till spring to get a load worked up for it. I was a little worried about the small brake, but it seems to work just fine. Yes I feel it but it is a rum after all. Very happy with pac nor's work. It was a wait but oh well. Sent it in the middle of January.

To anyone else looking, Bell and Carlson makes a nice replacement stock for A-bolts:
