I ran into some fairly rough conditions last weekend while moose scouting here in Colorado. My gortex got soaked through while huddling under the few short krummholz trees available. When I returned to my floorless fly there was a nonstop downpour from 8 pm to 2 am in the morning. Luckily I had painters plastic below my sleeping pad/bag to protect from moisture. My biggest fear was water slowly working it's way in from each side of the tent. I picked a knob to set up the fly so it would drain outside the fly.

Anyway, one item I've been considering is a SOL Escape Bivy. It only weighs around 8.5 ounces and is supposed to be fairly waterproof. I think it would work better than an emergency blanket or tyvek sheet since it is possible to surround your entire body or sleeping bag with the waterproof/breathable material.

It seems like afternoon rain showers are often common in the high alpine country and a SOL EB would be quick and easy way to prevent everything from getting soaked while out glassing and scouting. I've huddled under trees and rocks but often end up a bit wet in bigger downpours. My faith in quality gortex has somewhat diminished after my last outing.

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you have tried the SOL EB? Seems like a great "security blanket" to protect you from the elements in a floorless shelter or while glassing away from camp. I've watched a few youtube videos where hikers have used these instead of a sleeping bag in warmish weather but I'm a little leery of going to that extreme in the high alpine any later than August in Colorado.

Ive used mine a few times while camping under a fly, yeah a little tricky to wriggle into with the sleeping bag but they do keep you protected from rain blowing in and help hold in warmth.
They do have condensation on the inside so it will feel a little damp the next morning.

Small and light enough I have it in my kit all the time
