Morning Workouts for a New Parent

Just became a Dad a few weeks ago which has been amazing. Back to work now and my wife really would like me to workout in the morning because she and the baby aren’t up and I’m essentially not needed. I’m a morning person, but not a morning workout person haha. For those of you that workout in the morning, what are some things that get the adrenaline pumping and wake you up. I know getting good sleep is number one, but that just isn’t going to happen for the next few months.

Congrats mate! It's harder said than done with a newborn, but I've found that prioritising sleep when I can helps a lot with the morning get ups and workout. For example, as soon as we get the bubs down for the night I try and get to bed soon after so I can aim for 8-9hrs sleep, knowing there will be interruptions throughout the night. It's very easy to sit and scroll on your phone or watch a show once they're in bed, but it only takes away time from your own rest. More sleep equals more motivation.

Hydrate and get warm immediately. Increases in body temp are positively associated with athletic performance, within reason (obviously).

Just get down there and get a solid 20 min in to build the routine. May need to add some time in to warmup and limber up. Whatever Momma needs to feel good in this new process is what it takes. Build out a quick 3 exercise kettlebell or other routine that will work more than one group at a time. This is important to build a quick workout because you may need to do it at different times due to schedules and getting it done quick whenever you can will keep you on track.

Building the routine and habit is the single biggest factor. Eventually, it becomes an expectation on the designated days, irregardless of how you slept or feel. Over time, I slid my morning gym time and training hikes back to 5:15-5:30. I do the same routine upon getting up, same breakfast, same supplements, same amount of water and coffee -it all feeds into the consistency.

I got seven babies.

I get up at 330 and can get two hours of gym time before work.

My wife is a bad b!tch! She gets the kids ready for bed so I can crash at about 8. Also the two older ones are a big help.

With my job I have no idea when I'll be home. So lip pillows and caffeine it is. Otherwise Id never workout.

I am 67 and work out in Charlotte NC five times a week at 530AM.

Tips:
  • Get to bed early as you can, so you can rise and shine at/before dawn.
  • Lay your shoes and workout clothes out so you can climb into them and get out the door.
  • Skip the gym. Get a kettlebell and combine (at the outset) a mile or two of running plus calesthenics plus kettlebell. 45 min of these three will wake you up plenty and help you rapidly recover fitness.
This "I'm not a morning person" is simply not an excuse at all. Drag your ass outta bed and get after it. That's what I do. And by 8AM you'll go to work super alert, fit, strong and in a good mood. Nothing feels better. And you'll come home end of the day ready to play with Mom and that little tot. They'll love you for it.

Good luck to you. For me, nothing I have ever done is more challenging and -- especially -- rewarding than raising four children. That new baby will get you and your wife trained in no time...

First of all congratulations. Second of all - if I do any kind of workout in the morning especially during the week it's pushups, situps, lunges/squats. I don't hold the stereotypical job and I definitely can't get to bed early for multitudes of reasons. I wake up at 4am for work and it's coffee + stretch(if the baby doesn't wake up teething - my daughter is 17 months). If I have time in the morning I will do that or very seldomly I put a kettlebell in the living room to do farmer's carries.

I don't know if this will be helpful at all to you but honestly half the time for my workouts I use my daughter as my weight and she LOVES it. The other day I was doing goblet squats with a 44lbs kettlebell and she gave me this look of utter sadness until I used her instead. My daughter weighs about 24 lbs now and she will use her remote control teething toy and randmly do Goblet Squats.
