So my shop caught on fire last night

I’m not seeing much signs of heat damage, (sagging insulation, or major melting) which is good. I’m seeing more soot/smoke damage. As stated above the restoration company should have resources they could send them
Out. Another resource could be a place that cleans fur coats. I’d hit them with a vac or light brush but no chemicals or water.

So a couple purple mentioned insurance and a restoration company, since the structure is extremely sound and not compromised. We are just going to make the repairs necessary and move on. The shop is gutted of all the items and will be replacing all new insulation on the roof. For the walls/beams we hope to scrub, scrub and scrub some more, killz and then repaint with a few fresh coats. The one garage door is ruined but the other two are fine but are older, 1996. So we will probably make the upgrade and all new metal cabinets and bench. Just going to take a ton of time but feel blessed that my husband has the construction background. The elk mount and our bows are the most damaged but the bows are 5-7 years old anyways. Deal with those at another time

did you guys have a camping trailer burn also? years ago...

Yes unfortunately that was us. Camper was way worse. Fires are our nemesis and i really hope this is the last one!

Update on the mount. Taxidermist suggested a lot of the same information. Clean it with a extremely diluted cleaning solvent and start making swipes with the grain of the fur. And said bring it back in the spring so he can work on restoring some finer details that may be lost. He also said be on the look of when you start cleaning that if clumps of fur come off then it would need remounted with a new cape. Doesn’t seem to be the case at the moment. Couple pictures up close

I’m hoping a good healthy clean, touch up work, and if i can ozone bomb it for the smell and we should be in good working order. Anyone ozone bomb a mount?

This side worries me looks like some of the hair is uneven but the fur is strong and isn’t pulling out

You got lucky. I would toss out those powders. They might be bad now due to heat damage

I would start on the mount with compressed air to blow as much off as possible, then dry dust/wipe, then go to the diluted solvents. I have done a few really old mounts (like 1960s) of my grandpas that were hung in the loft of the cabin for 30 years. The compressed air and then dusting got 99% of the nasty stuff off.

Call your agent see if your premium well go up if you make a claim. That's looks like a few bucks to get it back to the way it was before the fire. I get sick of paying insurance and never using. only 2% of all claims are total losses on homeowners claims.

Update- got the mount cleaned up and back on the wall last night. Hes looking really good with his permanent spray tan the residue on the fur wiped right off with some diluted spray cleaner and tlc. Was hard to tell on the horns sometimes if it was residue coming off or the color of his horns. Good thing he was super dark anyways to begin with.
