So I need to pickup an inexpensive ML...

I just bought one of these in 2022. They were $24.99 on the rack. Are they making these in some country with 200% tariffs now, or what? Sheesh. I guess maybe Hodgdon bought ALL the rights to every BH209 product, so they almost tripled the price on everything related to BH. 🤷‍♂️
They go for $50-$70 these days. Just another way for CVA to gouge customers.

If you're getting a CVA and want to use open sights, make sure you don't buy one of the scoped models.

I spent way too much time and effort converting a scoped model to open sights.

You can't simply just buy the Williams Western Precision set and slap them on? At this point I've ruled out the Wolf and planning to try to stretch to the Accura if my NF scope would ever sell so I can pay for it. The cheapest model I could find is $485 and comes with iron sights and I'd put a cheap EGW pic rail on it (~$30) for the scope so I guess I would have stumbled out of an issue without even knowing it. The vendors I've asked stated that the barrels are drilled and tapped for irons on the ones that come with scopes so I figured it wouldn't be an issue, glad you spoke up.

I bought a CVA Accura "Plains Rifle" that was drilled and tapped for iron sights. On the shelf it has a durasight scope mount installed. The height of the stock comb was such that I had to coble together my sight system.

I believe at the time there were a run of these rifles that got mistakenly tapped for a front iron sight which led to my confusion.

Basically, I ended up getting a super high front ramp (Williams?) and a Lyman globe on front. My rear sight is a Weaver rail base with an XS threaded ghost ring and an aperture from Brownells.

It was a total PITA and I ended up needing a gunsmith to help me out with marrying up the front dovetails.

I would think that if you bought something existing with irons and upgraded to Williams sights there would be no problem. I just did the old "square peg, round hole" (it's kind of a lifestyle for me).

You can kind of see how high I had to get the globe for it to work with my stock.

Good Lord, hard pass! Thanks for the heads up. A bunch of the Wolf models come with that Durasight but the MR-X's seem to come with rails or irons. I'll definitely avoid anything with the Durasight mount.

I had an Optima V2 that shot great but I regrettably sold it when my state went to straight wall.

My brother has an Optima set up for Western hunting with a combined scope rail and rear sight. It’s very accurate. I’m mounting a cheap Burris fullfield II on it and taking it on a similar hunt to yours.

Both of us used Blackhorn and the Blackhorn breech plug.

I’ve drawn a few of those hunts, started with muzzle loader but I’m swapping to shotgun this year. I’ve missed several additional opportunities due to reloading time and if S TX, all of my shots/opportunities have been under 100 yards. They also have slug guns now that’ll do 200 yards fairly easy.

Get the Bobcat. I was surprised at mine. I shoot with some guys with $400 to $1000 guns and shoot my $70 gun right in there with them. Tinker with the load, it may vary from gun to gun, I guess.

I plan to have my shotgun as a backup and depending how I plan to hunt and setup will determine what I carry. I feel naked without a medium range option as some of those areas down there you can see for miles on flat ground in the salt flats. It's also a good excuse to get into the ML world and potentially Elk hunt with them.

I have the MR-X, only complaint is the separate ramrod, I'd rather it on the gun.

You can order the MRX with the WIlliams site, but it doesn't come with the front globe. If you decide you want the front globe, order the complete set with the rear because the rear that comes with the gun isn't high enough for the globe.

I bought it for a colorado gun, but just recently put a scope on it for KS. I went to buy a pic rail for it, and two places said they didn't have one that would fit. The second place told me that the rail should have came with gun. I looked through my bag of gun stuff and found a one-piece scope mount that fits perfectly, but I don't remember if it came with it or I got it somewhere else.

Very good info on the sights, thank you. EGW makes a pic rail for them I would plan to buy if I go that route and buy the one with iron sights which is the cheapest Accura I can find. Assuming the fits it'll probably be the only muzzleloader in the country wearing a Nightforce NXS. Hey, it's what I got! :ROFLMAO:

Gotcha. I went with the MRX, got a good deal at $450 I think. Figuring out a load was easy enough, only advice would be stay away from Powerbelts if Nilgai is on the menu. Depending on your dates/location you are more than welcome to borrow mine if you like.

Just picked up the savage 220 shotgun for a Jan TX hunt I drew, haven’t got a chance to shoot it yet but excited at the prospect of a 200 yard slug gun.
