I have an optima v2 that up to this year I’ve run white hots in because you couldn’t buy BH209 but now you can find it for the small price of a kidney, so I finally pulled out a kidney and ordered some.

So I know I have to upgrade the breech plug to use it but it seems like I have a few options. The CVA one is relatively inexpensive but I’m hearing CCI 209 magnums are the way to go with BH209 but the only place you can find them is Midway by the 1000….

OR I could just get the arrowhead breechplug kit that allows you to use LR primers or which I already have a ton of… so while the breech plug is more expensive, I wouldn’t need to source any primers so this would probably be cheaper.

Anyone try the arrowhead breech plug setup on a break action CVA like the optima? Any reason to not go this route over the CVA plug with 209s?

I just broke down and ordered 1k of the CCI 209 Magnums. Figure they'll only go up in price over time like everything else. Caught a deal with no hazmat and they were on sale. Keep an eye out and shop around.

Fed 209’s have been working great for me with a CVA accura with the 209 breech plug. 0 misfires so far, knock on wood 🪵 I am not going to clean until post season but have been using a drill bit to clean my breech plug out after every 10 shots or so

I have the CVA Paramount. Switched to the arrowhead LR primer several years ago. In my opinion the magnum rifle primer is the only way to go.

I just went through this dilemma and just bought a thousand of the cci magnum primers. I’ve never had a problem with the fed 209a, but the cci is supposedly far superior. I couldn’t find any data on if or how much better the arrowhead design with the rifle primers is so bought the primers while I could. With that said, if anyone in the Houston area needs some cci 209Ms or federal 209As let me know as I’ve got plenty to spare.

Fed 209A is actually the must recommend if you can get them.

No idea how well BH209 works with LR primers. Does arrowhead say anything about it?

I was going off what the guys at Hornady said on their podcast. They said it was far and away the best option for BH209

Both the CCI 209 Mag and Fed 209A work just fine with BH209. I have used both and have had zero issues.

1000 primers will last you quite a while. You could buy a lot of primers for what the Arrowhead breach plug would cost.

I would have to buy a $40 CVA breech plug plus 1000 primers of which Midway is the only one selling them for $85 per 1000 before tax, shipping and hazmat.

I have who knows how many LR primers so honestly I’d about break even for a better setup in the arrowhead system.

I guess I’ve answered my own question

I think your break even point would be so far down the road it’s negligible but don’t let me stop you from spending your money.

If you get the arrowhead let us know how it works for you. Always been curious if it works that much better to justify what it costs.

Curious how that Arrowhead breechplug works for you, please report back!
I use standard Win209 and Cheddite209 primers in my Optima with BH209 and works fine. Had them for reloading shotshells alread

I did this to my Optima Pro Pre 2006? breech plug and run magnum 209 primers.

It costed about $50 in tools. Its a very simple mod.

If you are interested i have another article that explains the process in detail that I could send you

I ended up taking a chance and going with the CVA variflame. It was $75 from scheels with free shipping and apparently if it leaks you can fix it with a specific oring.

I’ve only ever shot white hots thru this rifle so I’m moving to Blackhorn and this primer setup at the same time so not sure how good my information will be but happy to report back

Here is the other article with a little more in depth explanation.
