Sleeping bag recommendations

Looking for an extremely warm sleeping bag for a big guy. To be used in ambient temps down to -20. I am 6’3” 300lb. It will be used camping from the truck, no backpacking. I want something that is roomy, not concerned about weight nor cost. Thinking about a Wiggy but not sure if there is a better option? I don’t care for mummy designs, prefer a rectangle.

Good sleeping pad (think Thermarest with high R rating) and bivy cover are both crucial to get that sleeping bag to act like a furnace down to -20 as you inquired about.

Do NOT buy a bag that is rated for -20 (that’s just survival rating and marketing).

You NEEd a bag rated to -40

I would personally look at three brands. Marmot, Feathered Friends, and Western Mountaineering (can also have Hermits Hut store put extra fill inside bag if purchased from them, which makes bag provide more heat).

I can personally attest to all 3 of those brands making a bag that will let you sleep soundly in -20 weather.

Both feathered friends and western mountaineering make bags that give you that “non-mummy” design. Get on their website and click around.

When it comes to -20 weather, don’t skimp on the $$ or else you won’t sleep at all in temps that cold, especially for night after night.

Maybe find the bag design you want and keep checking classifieds or eBay or website sales around the holidays coming up. You should be able to save a few hundred $$ by finding a sale (of the bag you want). Good luck !!

Buy a high r value pad and wiggy makes some bigger bags than the usual mummy shape. Kifaru slick bag is also an option that is roomy. Long and wide in either.

Yea guess I learned something new. Those bags from Wiggys do look legit with some reviews that appear legit too.

Guess I get my bag for multipurpose (not just truck camping). Either way. Good luck and test it out before you depend on it !

Wiggy’s is the way to go if it is that cold. The hunter ultima Thule is a 2 bag system rated down to -60. Yup, -60. I haven’t had it below -40 yet but -35 wasn’t an issue at all. If it is above -20 I use my 5-star because the Wiggy’s is too warm. I am a larger guy with sleep apnea, there is enough room in the bag for the machine and battery and I can still move around. I sleep warm and don’t wear anything but a thin base layer on top.
You can also kneel up and relieve yourself into a bottle without leaving the bag, that’s a big deal as I get older
Makes a huge difference for a proper insulated pad under you like mentioned above.

You may want to check out the Wamlite sleeping bags and down air mattress in your search. They look rectangular shaped and you can choose different girth sizes to for.
