Got a few days to get out and put my gear to use. Still a bit early for sheds though and snow was plenty deep

Hiked in to a spot that usually holds wintering elk and set up shop.

Planned on making a big loop glassing plenty of country but that means spending a few nights out.

Looked like a yard sale trying to figure out how to best organize my new pack setup.

These mernio wool kaibab are nice on a extended trip like this as they don't hold the stink after a grinder hike in when they dry out.

Any observations on the gators specifically?

I been using these a bunch lately. I have about a hundred or so miles on this pair and I will say they have held up great. To me the uppers feel "similar" to the Nebo rain gear. I feared they would get torn to shreds but only this trip did I get a tiny tear in each gaiters. I think because the snow was crusted then I would break though on top of sage brush. I had a pack on and then all my weight on a single leg. Lowers are cordura and plenty tough. Velcro is strong. The tab at the bottom has taken a beating but it's holding it's own.

I'll snap a few pictures when I get home

I've used a lighter to melt all the threads when they start to fray like this. The Velcro on the closure is very strong and takes its toll on this tab.

That tab keeps the bottom of the Velcro extra secure when busting deep snow.

Weather really started to shift and snow flakes started falling

Loaded up and headed out for a spot less exposed to the wind.

I purchased a SKRE ptarmigan jacket in mountain stealth camo pattern a couple years ago and I liked it so much I decided to get the new ptarmigan with the hood in the new summit pattern. Here’s a comparison of the new and old.
Fit. The older ptarmigan fit was a little smaller than the other SKRE clothing. SKRE clothing seems to run a size smaller than most. I’m 6’2” and 240lbs. I normally wear xl but had to size up to 2xl in SKRE clothing but with the old ptarmigan I had to go with a 3xl and wouldn’t want it any smaller. The new ptarmigan I ordered in 2xl and the fit is perfect. I like the longer tail that both of them have to help keep those cold breezes off my lower back when sitting and the length of the sleeves is good on both. I usually have problems finding long sleeves that are long enough when I stretch my arms out. The new ptarmigan might even be an inch or so longer at the waist too.
Material. Not exactly sure what materials are used but the old ptarmigan is softer and maybe a little quieter but doesn’t feel like it would have the water resistance of the new ptarmigan. SKRE website says the new ptarmigan is %100 nylon with DWR treatment. The new ptarmigan feels like it’d be more durable that the old one but I don’t think I’d wear either pushing deer through a patch of briars. that’s what carhartts are for. When I got the old ptarmigan I noticed the zippers were really small. I thought I might have an issue with that but I haven’t had any problems. The new ptarmigan has a bigger main zipper and feels more durable. I also noticed that the new ptarmigan doesn’t seem to loft as much as the old ptarmigan I don’t know if it the outside material that makes it seem that way or if the DWR water treating affect the loft. Or maybe I just need to wear it a few times to break it in or something.
Performance. I have been able to use the old ptarmigan quite a bit with single digits temps and windchills below 0F. I’ve been able to handle the cold with just a mid or heavy baselayer under the jacket and have been plenty warm sitting still. I would get too hot walking and would have to shed the coat but it’s compact size makes it easy to put it about anywhere. I would just stuff mine in my game pouch in my blaze orange vest while deer hunting. I haven’t had a chance to use the new one yet because I just got it and it’s been in the 50s-70s. I did sweat just as much wearing the new one as I did with the old one for a few minutes to take some pictures tonight.
Both ptarmigans are small and compact the new ptarmigan might be a hair bigger just because it has the hood. I weighed both with my cheap fishing scale and the old ptarmigan in 3xl is 14.5 oz and the new ptarmigan in 2xl is 18.5oz. So both are pretty light for the warmth you get out of them.

Here are some pictures I took. Sorry the lighting kind of sucks in my man cave.

I just purchased the Nebo Rain Gear this afternoon. I am hoping this is the last thing that I need to add to my kit. Someone please tell me that I am making an awesome decision in purchasing this set. I don't know why, but I was a little hesitant in pulling the trigger on this. I suppose if I am one of the lucky ones and get a nice gift card with it, all will be well!! Pretty excited though to get the gear!

I purchased the gaiters over the weekend in hopes for a good gift card so I can get the rain gear.

Gaiters are really nice and lightweight. I’ll test them out this weekend if I get a chance to chase some turkeys around. Unfortunately only got a $15 gift card so the nebo rain gear will have to wait.

Yep. No problem. I can’t wait to actually get to try out the new one this fall/winter. I’ll be using all my SKRE gear on my first backcountry elk hunt this fall. It’ll be getting used all deer season too. I should have more to add to this thread later in the year.

Was able to test the gaiters out this morning in the very damp turkey woods. I find them very comfortable on my calves and the elastic strap holds them up where they’re supposed to sit. Went through a bunch of briars with no visible sign of wear. Most importantly they kept me completely dry. Definitely would recommend.

Alright!! I am now in receipt of my Nebo Rain Jacket and Pants. I feel like my entire arsenal is now complete!! Funny how when you look back on things and you realize that you would be a money ahead if would have just bought the entire Extreme Bundle. None the less though, I am pretty excited for it too!! The added bonus is that they threw me a $15 gift certificate too. Solid company for sure!!

Need to start planning what to pack for the Utah turkey opener. This isn't looking like Alpine short weather quite yet.

Well it's crazy spring weather so I opted to pack an array and leave what I don't need at base camp. The access I typically use is flooded out with all these late spring snow melting off. Plan B is walking a long time far away. I bought along the new Alpine tops and uinta pants but lots of rain in the forecast. I'm guessing I'll mostly be in the hardscrabble pants with kanati hoody and hardscrabble vest over the top with the Nebo shell as needed. I'll report back

Any other new products coming this year? Solid colors? More gloves?
