Whats everyone thinking about the the Sitka Kelvin Down WS Hoody? Im looking to potentially get one for a 2021 elk hunt in Montana. I have never had anything Sitka and just wondering if I should pull the trigger or not? Does anyone know of a place that has these at the best price?

I had picked up a older kelvin down hoody a while back (non WS model), if the ws model is sized like the older non ws, you may want to size down. I wear a large in all sitka jackets, but was swimming in the large kelvin hoody.

Iv heard great things about the ws model, it’s next on my list.

I actually ordered 2 from Amazon, one in large and one in xl...i typically wear xl in everything and like the fit of the large but will end up going with the xl if i keep it. There isnt much room for anything more than a base layer without any comfort in my opinion with the large. It seems short and the arm length is ok until you reach. My ultimate plan was to order from Amazon and return due to free shipping/returns just for sizing purposes and then try to find a good sale on it if I buy it. Just wearing it and trying it on I like it just didnt know if it would perform as good as they claim due to how "lite" it seems.

I have all three Sitka Puffys. All around favorite is absolutely the Kelvin Down Hoodie, however I wear the heck out of the other two as well. The only downside to the WS is Packability. It is a beast of a jacket. I wear the regular Kelvin Lite in the winter for active wear. From a usage standpoint here is how I’ve used the three:

KDH- Mountain Hunts . Packable and warm enough.

KWS- Wet environments...Perfect puffy for Kodiak.

KL - Active late season jacket. Mountain Lion, snow showing etc.

Having just been hunting in Montana this week, the wind stopper is a great feature. There’s quite a bit of wind here.
I was glad I brought mine even though temps are mild. Had it been cold and windy like the week before or week after my hunt, the WS would have been a lifesaver.

I am a big Sitka fan. The only thing that I have personally noticed is that they run a touch small per size

If I could get two pieces of Sitka gear and cheap out on everything else I would choose the Sitka down WS jacket and the Sitka timberline pants. Those two pieces could get me through about anything and the rest of the stuff you can get similar pieces for a lot less else where. The WS jacket was absolutely money on my Colorado elk rifle hunt this year. Plenty of warmth. I did not pack my jetstream, just my WS and dew point jacket. Awesome wearing around camp as well. I do not worry about durability as much with this one compared to 95% of the other puffys out there.

Those two pieces are what I told my dad to get. He hates spending money on clothes but wanted a nice jacket that’s kind of a do all. Really that’s the only piece I could think of that you could use in a lot of situations and be totally comfortable in. When I say do all I mean one really warm coat that you can get away with and not have to bring a bunch of layers and can handle a little precipitation. Of course you can’t walk around in it but 95% of the time I hike in a hoody only if it’s cold. Add the dew point rain jacket and you’ve got a really awesome set up.

That piece has been one of my mainstays in all of my major hunts the last two years. @Kotaman is correct saying it's a beast of a jacket and sizing is a bit large. There are definitely lighter and more packable options, but I'll be damned if that beast isn't in my pack every hunt. It's my insurance policy.

The only other thing I'd consider swapping it for is the Kifaru LPP, but my understanding is that that piece is not windproof which is a deal breaker for me.

I just picked up the Kelvin WS jacket. Last CO 3rd rifle was a bit cold for me. Since its a hybrid (primaloft + down) how do you think it d hold up in wet conditions?

Warm, windproof, runs a bit big and keeps in body heat better than any jacket I have owned.....I like the hood but some do not....

Put that on with the hood up and zip up close wrists.....get in freezing cold vehicle with engine off and watch the windows not fog up......repeat with your other warmest jacket and the windows will most likely fog from escaping body heat.

I actually had the LPP for 3rd rifle in CO last year. It did the job but was just warm enough but not exactly toasty. I ve switched it out for the WS. Nothing wrong with the LPP. Its solid. I just wanted warmer. I think the WS might be more water repellant as well. Both aren’t superpackable.

I was in CO 2nd season last year temps got in the single digits at 10,000 feet with knee deep snow and it performed awesome, honestly over kill for that hunt. You’ll be fine just have you a rain shell handy if it starts raining or heavy snow, no need in risking it. I had the Sitka dew point with it and I never got wet. I think that jacket would be fine for a light snow but don’t take that chance if your going to be miles in. Ditch the soft shell and go with some sort of rain shell.

I’ve deer hunted the north and to me it’s way colder tree stand hunting at the same temps out west. I used to get mad when these western guys would say how warm the jetstream jacket and kelvin lite hoody are, I just wanted to slap them, you’d die in those tree stand hunting the north lol jk. It’s just different out there, I guess it’s the dry air and altitude.

Another thumbs up for Ben... The Timberline pants are bombproof and good for every day of the year, just adjust the base layer accordingly. I have the original Kelvin jacket and it's just not quite the right piece for me, so I'm going to the Kelvin WS Hoody too. A third piece to round out the set is the Jetstream jacket-- my favorite shell for 90% of my hunts.
