Single Pin vs 5 pin

So I was at 3d range and my buddy just whopped me and took $20 bucks from me. He had the truglo single pin and he was able to adjust the yardage in a matter of seconds. I did chalk up his beating to being pretty green and I can do some tinkering on my sight. But man he deffinetly talked me into the idea of single pin. Now I also know it is all about what best suites people and how they feel with all of their gear, however I am just wanting to ask some more newbie questions on this sight issue. What do you all prefer and what brand would you recommend? i mean lower than $200. Now I am not just going to switch just after 1 session but I am deffinitly playing with the idea, his sight was bad azz!

I have an HHa lite sight and I love it the sight picture is clear and it’s inexpensive I would recommend getting a .010 pin so you’ll have a better chance with those long range distances

I like a 3-pin slider for a hunting bow. If it was just a target bow, one pin for sure.

I really like my Montana Black Gold.

The key to accuracy with a mulit pin slider is to get your bottom pin (floater) as close to the middle of site housing as reasonable and pick the correct site tape.

Between those two, a single pin all day long. I much prefer the cleaner sight picture and since I do a fair amount of target shooting all year, I'm much more used to a single pin.

I have been running a trophy ridge peak head (firewire v5 prior) on spott hogg tommy hoggs and hogg fathers for about 8 or 9 years. They have inline multiple pins, same field of view as a single pin, but you have multiple adjustable pins. i just use 3 of the 5 pins, run the other 2 all the way down, use the 3rd pin as my slider. it is the bees knees for hunting, best of both worlds. i have this set up on 4 bows currently.

Just switched from a double pin Fast Eddie to the new Black Gold Mountain Lite 3 pin. Double pin was great for the clean sight picture but the pin gap I did not care for in hunting scenarios. I prefer the 3 pin slider as it is best of both worlds. My normal setup is 20,30,40, if i need to dial top pin gets me to 80, bottom pin gets me to 100. Ideally I use my top pin when dialing but having that 3rd pin it gets every bit out of the sight tape.

I switched from a 7 pin to a single pin hha slider. I wouldn’t go back. I found keeping it around 27 with my old arrows would put me in the kill zone on elk from 0 to the low 30’s. On longer shots there is less to think about when aiming, which makes me more relaxed. I was never comfortable with gap shooting.

Target range is very, very different than hunting. Single pin slider all day every day for target, and a 5 pin slider for hunting.

Personally, not a fan of the fast eddie. I like the Hogg Father, has micro adjust and the ability to use custom sight tapes.

5-pin slider would be my choice for sure (although I use a 6 pin slider). The last thing I want is to have to move my sight for a shot. Personally I shoot MBGs and like them way better than the Hogg sliders I've owned (Fast Eddie and Tommy Hogg), especially the new green ring ones. The old SH Hunter with the white ring is a killer sight though. Personally I'd rather have 5 fixed than a 1-pin slider.

Do you hunt with a bow or just a 3D shooter?
Sorry I should have specified about what I am using it for! I am almost entirely hunting spot and stalk here in Oregon. But I do 3d for practice. My set up on my bow is going to be used for hunting #1. Now that was one of my concerns about the single pin, If were hunting deer/elk we may not have time to adjust the pin. Thats actually why I bought the 5 pin Axcel, b/c of no need to adjust. But man my buddy was dead on the 3d targets but that was just casual shooting.

Okay so I am also super interested in the "Slider" I read the other hunters on another forum love using a slider. So, newb question... is the slider for the last pin? Like 1-4 are fixed and the 5th would be a slider?

The more I hear the more I like of the slider idea. I would think 3 pins plus a slider would be good.

Been using a CBE single pin slider for the last 6 years. When I’m hunting I set the pin at 50 and know where to hold over/under from 10-60 yards. Past 60 I adjust it. If I don’t have time to adjust I probably shouldn’t be taking the shot anyway.

I have been using HHA single pin sliders for years...Great sights! I think you will love the clean sight picture a single pin gives you!

The whole housing slides up and down. I use 20,30,40,50,60 yard pins and can slide the housing up/down for more precision using a sight tape and my 60 yard pin.

A single pin will out-perform a 5 pin on 3d or any target range, but the 5 pin is better for hunting scenarios.

I have a 5 pin Fast Eddie and love it. Used it fixed out to 60 and as a slider after that.

I started with a 5 pin fixed. Tried a single for about 3 weeks one deer season. Muffed two shots on nice animals. One a clean miss and the other I just couldn’t dial fast enough. Went back to a three pin in the slider for the rest of the season and then to 5 after season.

I found the “clean” sight picture overrated for me personally. 5 pin slider is the Best of both worlds IMO. I have a <=20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 yard pin and can dial for target practice further out.

Also, I went tru ball accel sight. It has been fine but I might go fast Eddie if I do it again.
