Single Bevel

Hey JP, what bones have you slices right through? I just got back into traditional equipment after a 20 year layoff and I shot a decent sized 4 point Muley the other day in the shoulder and got zero penetration. I threw a mineral lick and some cameras out and I've got video of him three days later and he is barely limping? I was at about 15ft when I shot and wasn't worried about hitting the leg at that range. I was shooting 125 stingers total arrow weight of 450 grns. I have since added 100 grns up front to help but still worried.

With the Northern Broad heads? I have only shot about 10 feral goats,3 pigs and a couple of chamois with them. So only really light boned game. I have shot 3 big billy goats(probably 150lbs+ live weight) on purpose in the front shoulder joint and got full pass through and broke both leg bones.
My Australian friend who introduced me to them has taken ALOT of big pigs, scrub bulls, Wapiti,Tahr and Axis deer with them(with a compound).

People want to focus to much on equipment and not their own skills in my opinion.
This elk along with many others fell to a wood arrow, Zwickey double bevel Delta broad head. It went through a rib and through the off side shoulder. The elk traveled less then 20 yards about like all the rest.

How many pictures can you post up of that thing? Well mr "look at me" thanks for your valuable input and another chance to ogle your beautiful after work bull, but I most definitely am focused more on my "skills" but was somewhat baffled when it didn't break a little 3 year old mule deer leg bone. At 15 FEET! Just looking for advice or dare I say opinions on equipment. I definitely screwed up when I didnt spend more time to close my left eye and make sure I slid behind the leg. Like I said I am working on my skills. I wont do that again.

Jason, I was in no way saying you are one of the people I am referring to as blaming your equipment instead of your skills. I was only pointing out a common occurrence I see on the internet and people I talk to that when something doesn't work for them they instantly want to blame the equipment and change to something different-better. Then they go around and say this is the only way to go...

As far as "Look at me" Yes I am proud of that bull but could care less about that. I simple post pics because I enjoy looking at and reading pics and stories as much as anybody so try and return the favor and add material when I can.

Oh yeah I should have used one of those smiley faces or something. I am only half serious half the time so don't worry about me. I would be proud of that Bull too. Just giving you crap. I enjoy seeing pics even if it's the same Bull three times. Ha ha.

Nice bull Jesse. I seem to recall that you shoot heavier rigs than most trad folks (low 70#'s?), and that often allows for wider double edge or three blade broadheads. In my little peanut brain single bevels are for lighter weight bows to compensate for a little less horsepower.

Two different paths to the same outcome.

I do agree that we tend to focus on the "what we can immediately control" (gear) over the intangibles and unknowns (moment of truth performance). Human nature i guess.

Thanks tater. I understand that some people might be wanting to compensate for a little less horse power and I have nothing in the world against single bevel heads. I know people that use and love them with heavey set ups and light ones. I also know people that use double bevel with light set ups that regularly take big game with no problems. My point is I read and hear all to often "single bevel is the only way to go with trad" and " to penetrate a rib on big game you need single bevel" and on and on. I'm not saying one is right or wrong in fact I'm saying the opposite both are great it just seems most single bevel threads I read there are people saying everything else is inferior or blame their past equipment. To much typing on the phone for me so good luck to everyone this season.
