silly sock question

I've honestly never hunted wearing rubber boots, but bought a pair for a 7 day fly in. Trying to pack light, 70lbs limit, and thought I could get by with 3pr of high socks, but on my weekend walks they are totally soaked with sweat. Does everyone just take enough to change out every day?

I don’t think sock questions are silly at all. I’d sooner scrimp on food than on socks. With normal footwear, I take 3 pairs of wool socks total (including the ones I’m wearing), and enough thin liner socks to change those each day. If forced, I could get by with two pairs of the wool ones. If all I had were rubber muck boots, I think my feet would be wet all week. Those boots are pretty hard to dry out overnight. This depends on how much walking is done, of course. We hunted in stocking foot waders last year, but mostly stayed near camp and called. I could dry those out ok . The little wood stove helped with that.

I agree...not a silly question at all.

I take LaCrosse Alphaburly knee-high, insulated rubber boots for 10-14 day drop hunts...and I always have three-pairs of wool socks and a couple pairs of lite liner-socks. I'm continually hanging a pair of socks on a line in my tent over night and the next day and swap-out socks daily...they're always dry for the next rotation. The third pair is part of my Alamo...usually I can pull it off with two-pair, but I always bring a third.

The trick for me to wearing those boots day after day and keeping them dry on the inside has been...every night make sure that I pull the sides all the way down, remove the insoles, and place everything in my tent vestibule to air out through the night and out of the rain. That's worked really well for me for several years now on hunts that I've been lucky enough not to have to live in my chest waders!
