Sierra 88 TMK Load Data

16” factory tikka barrel with a TBAC ultra 9
24 grains of XBR
New Lapua brass
205MAR primers
2.46 OAL jumping .02
2600 FPS on average over 30 rounds.

The bottom left 10 shot group was .75” then made some zero adjustments on paper then verified drops on C zone sized steel IPSC targets out to 600. I need to double check those drops on paper but pretty happy that these things stabilize with the 1/8 twist. Basically zero load development too. Never messed with other seating depths. I tried 23 grains and was getting 2500FPS with 1” ten shot groups and tried two rounds with 25 grains getting 2700 fps but had some heavy bolt lift. Side note, the more I shoot the fixed six the more I like it.IMG_5992.jpegIMG_5987.jpeg

Did some fire forming for 22-250 ai from regular 22-250 rem brass. 39.5 gr n555 and cci200. Really happy with the consistency and had a very low sd for fire forming. Averaged 3080fps.
Man fireforming is such a hassle and you don’t get useful data out of fireforming loads….. 🙄

Said someone who has never actually done it.

Nice shooting

Got some 88s in the mail today and shot a bit before supper. Tikka 16” .223, factory barrel.

23.0 XBR 2553 fps

23.4 XBR 2609 fps

Lake city brass, CCI 450 primers. Loaded to 2.458 oal, .025 off the lands. Only shot 5 rounds of each, one group was right at an inch, the other was barely over. Slightly cratered primers with both loads, no ejector marks or heavy bolt lift.

I used to use cheaper components and faster powder for fire forming but now I pretty much just load up the components I want to shoot and have at er. I now have about 400 fireformed 22-250 ai brass so that will out last this barrel if I don't step on them too hard.

I have a buddy who can hopefully get some terminal reports on pigs if I load him up 556 16” AR with the 88’s. They’ll have to be mag length though.

Has anyone loaded 88’s with lever or xbr at mag length? Care to share load data?

I'm using windowed mags, or at a minimum, my C-Products 350 Legend Duramags which allow 2.325" without being windowed. If he can use magazines like those, I've listed those loads. If he needs standard mag length of 2.26", that would put the ogive quite a ways down in the case neck. Might work, but I'm not much help there.

Forgot I have windowed mags. I’ll load for that and send em with the ammo.

I’ll check your load out thanks!

16” factory Tikka .223

2.458 OAL, .025 off the lands
23.9 gr XBR
Lake city brass, CCI 450 primers
2676 fps avg for ten rounds

Use this at your own risk of course, but I had zero ejector marks or any sign of over pressure. That velocity lines up great with quick drop at my elevation so I’m not gonna try any hotter loads for now. I’ll shoot some at distance this evening, if they true out and seem to be stable I’m going to try to fill my second bear tag this weekend with this rifle.

Load them slower than normal so they run at normal AR15 pressures.
Probably 21-21.5 XBR at 2.26”
And 23.5-24gr CFE223/Leverevolution. Stop with this powder whenever getting compressed loads.

I’ll load up 10each of both loads and get back to you with velocity and groups.

The slow part will also help with terminal testing, since we really want to know the low end of functional velocity.

I double checked the Hornady 12th edition for 88gr data. They had both cfe223 and xbr listed, but for longer than normal mag length. If you have windowed mags, you might be able to swing the longer length listed (or at least close to it) out of an AR IMG_0987.jpeg

I can load them at 2.34.

I was thinking 23-2400 was likely, and all shots will be within 200 yards, most inside 100

2.26” is definitely too short for the 88’s. Ogive starts to taper inside of case neck.
You should be good at any length over 2.3.
I just don’t have the longer AR mags you do.

Will chrono them out of a 12.5” later today.
Went with 21.5gr 8208XBR and 24.0gr Leverevolution. Lake city brass. Small base rcbs sizing die. Cci 450.

Here’s today’s results for the 88’s.
12.5” ar15
Loaded to mag length as noted in above post.

21.5gr XBR: 2307fps
24.0gr Lever: 2375fps.

Nothing special group wise, but good enough to zero off of and kill pigs out to 200yds if so inclined.
More importantly, they fed reliably and were gassed appropriately for a suppressed AR.

That’s what I needed. He’ll be in a 16” gun. Went 24.5gr lever at 2.335” windowed mags. Should tighten up groups a little hopefully. Probably 2450-2500fps if I had to guess.

Managed to sneak out tonight for some longer range testing. 20" 8 twist stock tikka .223 at 2588 fps. First round hits at 590 and 630 yards. Guessed at a .3 mil correction to quick drop. Looked like I was trending .1 mil low. Will test on a water line target when I have more time, but so far I'm impressed!
