Wasn’t a great setup, shooting standing off a tank trap that was a little tall for me. Also, I only had 6 loaded rounds left and was shooting as quickly as I could. Tikka 223 Varmint, 73 eld, 300 yds. The shot out to the left hit right where the trigger broke. I’ll likely never get to hunt big game with my 223, but if I do I’d have zero concern with this load. Brass was a mix of WIN/Winchester headstamp.

First 10 round group with my new Tikka 7-08. These are my first handloads for this rifle, and I'm using 120 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips over 44 grains of Varget. Cases are 1x fired, necked down, Federal .308 win. This was sort of an impromptu session in my backyard between meetings, and I'm pumped to get it to the range for a focused session to check velocity and shoot long range. Last round was the bottom left, and this wasn't a flier, I was in a hurry and pulled it all on my own.

new T3x Hunter LH .243 1:8 with 22" barrel, 10x SWFA in DNZ mount. started out feb 3 at 30F with some sig 100gr venari soft points to sight in, and then some hornady 90 ELD-X and blackhills 90 gr TGK. 100 yards off a bench with decent rests.PrecHntr90-eldx-unsup.jpgBHA90TGK-unsupp.jpg

rifle likes the black hills better because who doesn't like more expensive ammo? but it was cold and after shooting all my other fun rifles suppressed, my ears were unexcited about an unthreaded 22" barrel and complaining even with foam and muffs. off to Kampfeld Custom to cut back to 20" and threaded. quite pleased with how it came out.

MUCH more fun to shoot suppressed. too lazy to get velocity numbers in winter though so we'll never know what those 2 inches cost. reckon i can live with that. SIG SRD-762 canIMG_5171.jpg

Bought a Superlite in 300 WSM as a potential project gun for a 6UM or 6-7 PRC. But I think I may just keep it as a 300 WSM until barrel is shot out

Back from gunsmith who chopped 2” and threaded for suppressor. I upped the charge 0.5 grains to make up the chop…velocity still a little less than factory length. I inadvertently shortened COAL by 38 thousandths. I may add a little more powder and increase COAL back to 3.003” just to see if it makes any difference.

Otherwise, just remounted scope with no adjustments (and shot suppressed).

Edit: Shot 7 was different: had highest velocity and a strong ammonia smell. Otherwise my 3 shot mag groups were relatively tight with 2nd mag group further right than others which I attribute to “I suck” at consistency in setup.

OK I've been coming to some conclusions with reloading via this rifle. I ran out of varget and had to switch to some imr4064 I had. I also switched to the hornady 168gr bthp.

Rifle is a 308 t3x with an 18 inch bartlein, nxs 2.5-10x32, pse stock. Finish weight is 9lbs.

Zero load development, I made one up and loaded 50. Brass was 5 or 6x fired and filthy. Zero prep besides sizing the neck.

Middle is sight in, fouling after cleaning and barrel swap and load change and getting warmed up. 2 fliers that I called myself on in groups 2 and 3. 10-15 minutes between strings. Rounds were fired fairly rapidly at 10x on the rifle. Prone. 100 yds. Pack and rear back for support.

Conclusion? Rifle either shoots or it doesn't. Shooter either makes it happen or he doesn't. Load dev doesn't seem to matter with this barrel I haven't done 1 ladder, test with bullets or powders. I just picked stuff and shot. I'm confident a better shooter could have held all 4 groups to half minute or better.

The tikka 6.5CM CTR kept showing it's consistency on my last range trip

The 223 tikka also had some good groups although there was a wandering zero. Although not photographed, earlier groups had been dead zeroed with black hills 77tmks, and this group is now at almost an inch right (and I had already dialed an elevation adjustment of .3 mils from previous zero). Using SWFA 3-15 in Unknown Tikka Rings torqued and blue loctited. Perhaps I need to retorque action screws and open up the barrel channel. It had been shooting well before I rescoped to SWFA so I didn't open the barrel channel initially.

Corrected my COAL and upped my powder charge another 0.5 grain…pretty much back to where I was before barrel was chopped.

Need to zero scope and verify at distance.

All you guys shooting the 75s and 77s in your 8 twist tikkas gotta try the 52gr SMK
It absolutely blows the heavies away at 100 and 200 yards in my opinion. They worked well with varget too but not this well.
Working with some tac today at 100yds in my t3x. I'm gonna continue working with 24.5gr I think. Factory CTR barrel with around 2000 rds on it. Shot at 10x on an NXS compact

I got some 75gr eldms loaded up with tac I'll report on tomorrow probably. Perhaps I'll eat my words above on the 52s vs the 75s lol

I think the 52s are going to be inferior for long range usage.

300 WSM is finally coming around. 190 gr Speer Impact. More likely my shooting improving.
