Should cell cams be banned?

I live in north central Texas and have hunted a fair amount of Texas. If you want to improve the quality of hunting you will do more by banning high fences for game animals than cell cameras. I have used cell cameras when my lease was 2 hours away. I use cell cameras when pig hunting a property to figure out their patterns.

I still have to be there to take the shot when the animal is there. The cell camera saves fuel and time.

Why are you concerned about saving time while hunting?
Isn’t that the point? To spend time hunting? lol

During pig hunting "season" I can be hunting two or three properties that are all hours apart. I am saving miles and time checking feeders & signs so I can spend more time actually hunting.

I don't see one person pushing for cam bans on anything other than big game. Deer and elk to be exact. And it sounds like it's the cell cams that give real time info that people want out of the woods during season.

I use them on private and have considered using them on public too but where I hunt the elk don’t go far from where they’re at in the summer. I’d be fine if they got rid of them on public during the season.

Lots of stories of guys getting the text, seeing the buck they want in an area, and going out to shoot em. I think the fair chase argument is the major issue.
I don't see it that way. Any animal can pattern in an area with or without out camera being used. I have seen many times deer pigs turkeys came to the same spot for 3-5 days in a row same time approximately and then the day I hunt, nothing. I am sure I am not a one out for that. I wil say is it lazy, yes, but if we have the technology as a cell camera, there's literally no difference in a regular camera other than pulling the memory card and then viewing pictures that give you the same exact thing just at a later time. Seems like a dumb argument to me, I don't hunt in that state so it doesn't matter to me really, but just seems pretty stupid.

You think it's a dumb argument? Say if a guy has a dozen cell cameras out and he gets a picture of a massive buck at a specific location and is able to slip in there to harvest it?

I'm not necessarily a strong opponent but think that the argument against real-time monitoring of trophy animals as being unfair chase holds water.

Plenty of trophy stories now explain a guy scrolling through pictures on his phone while sitting in his recliner before making a move. https://gon.com/hunting/200-inch-georgia-bow-buck-kicks-off-new-year

It's still legal in our state so I don't knock a guy doing it, though believe more and more folks will be asking the question whether it's fair chase, especially on public ground.

In your point, I see. But I also see people complaining because they got the deer first and they didnt even have a chance. But are they hunting and trying? Its still hunting. Its all luck in the end, whether its a normal cam or cell cam. But if someone isnt utilizing the technology then thats on them. Just because people use them doesn't mean they should be banned because others think it isnt fair. Seems like liberals crying because they cant get there way. Even if you scroll and scroll and a deer shows up, what is the difference between that and going to the woods, getting your SD card, reviewing it and saying dang there's a good buck last couple days and im going to stay out and sit. Literally the same thing just in a different setting of checking the camera. I don't have a place to hunt for the past couple years. I had both, but why even bother hassling yourself going to physically check the cameras when you can just do it from home or wherever you are. Same data.

Yep, let’s skip that pesky step where you ACTUALLY have to walk into the woods.
What kinda weirdo would WANT to spend time in the wild??!!

As for the whole first part of your post, don’t complain when I rig my thermal drone to fire a round for me. Then all I have to do is show up and drag.
I mean, to your point, it’s only your fault if you don’t get with the times and join me.
Who wants to waste time WAITING on a deer?

If its something you'd like to do, go for it. I wouldn't care. Like you said, it would be my fault for not keeping up with the times. Everyone can hunt and prepare how they hunt, whether by camera or no camera. In the end, you still need to hunt and just because you see deer on camera doesn't mean you'll get them.

I think difference here is you are talking about actually putting in the work to pattern an animal vs phone notification >>> big buck in the back 40 RIGHT NOW >>> go shoot it.

just because you see deer on camera doesn't mean you'll get them.

I'm sure there's plenty of unpublished stories of animals on cams that don't get killed.
I see this all the time.
If it doesn’t guarantee success (nothing does) then why use it?
Because it confers an ADVANTAGE. My argument is that it’s an unfair advantage.
NOT an unfair advantage between hunters. An unfair advantage between the hunter and the prey.
Consideration of how many advantages we take in to the woods with us is fair chase and sportsmanship.

If you don’t feel it gives you an advantage, why pay for it? Just stop wasting your time with something that obviously isn’t helpful at all.

That argument could hold water also… let’s say my ten year old wants to hunt the national forest by our house. Let’s say a wealthy hunter with 25 cell cams scattered about the same 1,000 acre block my son has learned. The guy sees a monster buck hanging around all day Tuesday, then takes off work and whacks him on Wednesday. We finish out the season never knowing he’s long gone.

Yeah it’s legal and yeah it’s public ground, but whether it’s right is still a good question.

I’m still ambivalent about it on private ground (especially since I’d love to watch my private camp if it had cell coverage), but the more I learn about how they’re being used on public land during the season the more I cringe.

Because it's fun.
