Shortest barrel for 7 PRC ??

I realize they make the 7BC for shorter barrel but don’t know how I feel about reloading that brass or those pressures. What is the shortest barrel a guy can use with a can on 7 PRC ? I still want to be able to ethically reach out to 800.

I have a 20” benchmark, shoots 2870. Doing it over I would’ve gone 18” and chambered 7-300 PRC.

I would be worried about a 7-300 spitting a lot of unburned powder out of an 18” barrel.

Powder burn rates would be my main consideration when trying to make a short barreled magnum cartridge. You might be able to do some numbers on Gordy’s reloading tool with a similiar cartridge to see estimates on velocity and burn rates.

I wouldn't worry a bit. I have a bigger 7mm than what is being discussed in this thread and it works great in a 20".

No suppressor 22" with a brake, 20" would be my limit with a can. While shorter is nice there is more barrel rotation the shorter you go which effectively effects shootability. A can on a 20" is a great balance of speed and how the gun tracks under recoil with the weight of the can out front. As with any gun, stock ergos, overall weight and even grain weight will effect how the gun recoils. Really comes down to what you prefer and accept as recoil or ability to track a shot.

What is barrel rotation and how does it limit shootability in short barrels? Are you just saying that a shorter barrel would have more muzzle jump? I'm not sure that's true, but even if it is, I don't get the relevance on a magnum where you have no chance of tracking the shot anyway. As long as you maintain desired MV, shorter is better.

Barrel rotation/muzzle flip same thing, it's a plane based on line of sight and there is rotation from the contact point of your shoulder. The further the weight from that point the less flip or rotation you will experience and the goal is to have the rifle track in a straight line and not an arc. Same reason you see muzzle heavy in prs etc. Once again, I say it's what you find as acceptable recoil and everyone's interpretation of their limit is different. Take the same gun and have two different length barrels, shoot it and you will see what I'm getting at.

Depends on DA

When my 22” burns up, I’m going 18”.

If it wasn’t Carbon I’d cut it to 18” tomorrow.

Once you get lower than 20 you really start limiting your bullets. 22” is really the sweet spot I think to shoot a majority of bullets

Edit* for long range applications where velocity matters for expansion.

I have a 18” 7prc being built right now. With stock ammo I expect it will shoot 2700-2800 (depending on bullet selection). I run a can so the extra few inches off will be appreciated.

Mine is 20" and I've taken it to a mile several times. Is that long enough distance?
Hunting bullet impact velocity. Yeah there’s bullets that will still work at distance but once you start getting out there with specific bullets your impact velocity on some options goes down. I don’t disagree with anybody on here I’m just stating literal facts on impact velocity while hunting. If my bullet doesn’t expand under 1800 fps why would I use it. Where a hair faster I have a better chance? All I’m stating is there’s some bullets you will be limited to. I shoot a few 18” rifles in similar calibers and I just know once I really get down there in speed my killing effectiveness farther out goes down.

My 20" makes 3200 fps with a 180 Hybrid, its killing range is farther than my effective game shooting range. This combo retains 1800 fps to 1200+ yards.
Slick man thats awesome and still 20”. Like I said I agree with you if you find the right bullets that will do it. I’m simply stating that running other bullet options you will be limited because they will not be running those similar speeds. So in a 18” that’s in theory loosing 30-85fps. Maybe more. A majority of options out there you will be limited on distance. There are outliers but my original comment clearly states that you’re just limited not that you can’t do it. Debating to debate is fun and all but read.
