Short Range Suppressed Rifle for Deer Woods

I was looking in to this exact thing myself recently and came across a new Howa 1500 model from Legacy with a 16.25" barrel in .308 and 6.5 creed. Was thinking it would be a perfect woods gun for my Ultra7 and a 1.5-8 Razor HD LH I have sitting in the safe. If it's only a 100 yard rifle, the loss in MV shouldn't matter. I have other rifles for longer ranges.

My 6.5 tikka is cut to 20" and threaded 1/2x28. I currently have a harvester on it and really like the setup. I also have a kimber cut to 17" threaded 1/2x28 and is noticably louder with the same suppressor.

I'd just cut your current barrel down to where you like it and keep the overall barrel and suppressor length reasonable.

Fellow PA boy here and if I were you I'd be looking at a bolt action 300 BLK pistol. If money is no option, the Q Mini Fix is unbeatable, but for those of us with a budget, you can buy a stock action with a 223 bolt face and there are a number of pistol chassis out there to add a brace to an you have a nice little handy PA deer woods gun.

I have a 10" 300blk pistol. It's great wood gunwith a can. Real performer with barnes.

Right now with ATF making up rules. Looks like braces are in alot of danger.

Otherwise id say do a pistol.

I do like the idea of a 18" 65 though

I built exactly what you are looking for, for the same reason. You could use any cartridge but this is my little 300blk pistol. Put a folding brace on it and it has been a little deer hammer. You could do the same with a 6.5 creed pistol as well. Since there is no “action” it makes it a super compact setup. I’ve even been successful with it antelope hunting in Wyoming.

I have almost exactly what your looking at... Threaded 9/16 at 20 inch barrel. Should be plenty of meat at 18 to go 5/8. Even has the bolt on the correct side.

Since I have no plans to shoot subsonic, I dont think the 300blk cartridge or twist rate is really optimal for me.

I think something like 6mm BR or 30br in a 16" barrel would be awesome. A little more capacity than the BLK and common bolt face (LH .223 bolt is harder to find) but it should be quieter than a creedmoor or .308 and less powder.

My 16.5” 308 with a tbac u9 is my favorite little hammer. Shoots cheap factory 150 grain hunting ammo about 2600 fps and accurate enough for 300 yards on deer, way farther than I actually have access to,

Tikka makes a “battue” model in their T3X lineup. I have one in 30-06. Factory 20” barrel with awesome open sights. Perfect short range/brush/guide gun. It’s my favorite of all 4 of my T3Xs.

How about Ruger gunsite scout? They make several different calibers in LH action. I love mine in .308, 16” barrel, silencerco can, trijicon 1-4x24. Lots of pigs/deer killed with it.

For me, the Gunsite scout starts out a bit heavy for the barrel length and I'm not really a fan of that magazine style on guns I hike with a lot.

But is a nice-looking rifle and interesting with the scout setup.

You’re not going to see your suppressor. Tikka lite barrels can be threaded 5/8x24 without issue when cut to 20”.

What kind of mount? iirc. a t3 lite barrel is right @ .66 @ 18". 5/8's would only have about .037" face to square off which is less than half the standard of .1" Thanks.

Without being knowledgeable on PA regs:
First option would be a “pistol” style build with stabilizer and all. (Similar to what was posted above)
If traditional rifle, I wouldn’t go longer than 16.25”. It’s not needed. I would personally lean towards something in 300blk for cost and ease of super/suppressed ammo (or .458socom, .450bush, etc) for that range. I’d have a fixed power 2.5x or 4x scope (with dope on super and sub loads taped inside scope cover). Super lightweight rig. And you can pop something subsonic waiting on mr. deer...I’m currently building a 458 socom around this theory. My 458socom AR suppressed shooting 500grns traveling 1000fps is a freight train within 100yds. (Not as quiet as a 22lr, 9mm, etc. but hearing safe for a few shots)

I measured mine around .65-.66 at 18.33".

I was thinking I would get it threaded 9/16 and then use a thread adapter to get to 5/8. Or get a custom 9/16 griffin taper muzzle device made...

That's what I've done on my 270 wsm T3 and got a 9/16x24 to 5/8x24 adapter. Worked great, but I'm about to swap the factory barrel for light palma

I’m using mostly Surefire cans. However I have seen enough direct threaded that it doesn’t scare me.
