Hey all - looking to build my second rifle and having a hard time deciding on caliber. This rifle will supplement my 16.5" shorty 308 which I love (picture below). Here is my criteria for this build, so I'm trying to decide which caliber to chamber in.
* will be ran suppressed 100% of the time
* I do not reload
* for hunting antelope, deer, elk, bear, moose (pretty much everything in the North America)
* long action only since I have a nice McMillan stock to use
Trying to keep the barrel length to 20-22" or so. I want this rifle to bridge the gap from my 16.5" 308 which I feel is a 300-400 yard max rifle. So this rifle is to take game up to, and past those distances to I'd say 750 yards'ish. This way I have 2 very usable rifles for different scenarios without too much overlap.
I'm looking at chambering in 30-06, 280AI, or 300wm. I've narrowed it down to these 3 for ease of finding ammo on the shelf (with 280AI being harder obviously, but I'm intrigued by the BC and know ammo manufacturers are now offering off the shelf loads for this).
What would you do? It will be put in a McMillan classic stock, R700/clone action, and Proof carbon barrel.
Thanks
