So I purchased a new to me kimber Montana in 270 wsm and I’m thinking about getting the barrel shortened to 16-18 inches. I have a suppressor on the way and would like to turn it into a light handy rifle. What kind of velocities would I be looking at? I know wsm calibers like long barrels but I have a 270 wsm already with a reload that shoots 1/2 to 3/4 inch groups consistently. Problem is it’s a 10.5 pound gun that I don’t really like packing around for days on end. Also any scope recommendations? I see midway has trijicon 3x9x40 accupoints for around 600 bucks. Is that a viable option?

I have a Credo in 3-9x40mm on my .270 Win Montana that I really like. Has the green mil-square reticle. Also, have a 3-9x40mm Accupoint on my muzzy. Has the green mildot reticle and is even lighter. Be aware the turrets (MOA) and reticle (MIL) don't match on the Accupoint. Once sighted in I just use the reticle for holdover rather than dialing. This is your lighter option though.

Probably going to lose 25-40fps/inch removed from the barrel. Leupold VX3-HD 2.5x8 would match up real nice.

Went with the Trijicon 3x9 mildot in green. I will also just use those for drops. In my 24 inch 270 wsm I’m getting just shy of 3400 fps with 140 accubonds so if I lose a couple hundred fps in the new rifle I’ll still be very happy with a light handy rifle.

In my experience with a .300WSM the velocity loss was only about 15fps/inch when I went from 24 to 20. That being said, I handload and was able to come up with a new load with the same bullet using a different powder.

25-40 seemed a little much to me too. I don’t know though I’m using retumbo in my reloads and may need to got a faster burning powder. Although even if I had a 7 pound suppressed rifle flingin 140 grain accubonds at 3050 I wouldn’t gripe.

Retumbo is a bit slow for a 18-20 inch barrel. I would guess that you could probably find a pretty close load if you switched to H1000, N170, N560, MagPro, or RL25 or 26.
