Anyone done it? From what I read the Sliks are 28mm diameter for the biggest tube and are 8 layers of carbon.

I'm hoping to try out shooting off of a tripod for a bit and the used market for 834s and similar is a lot more appealing to me than the RRS/Leofoto prices I'm seeing.

You can, will be just OK, but, the middle column and apex, and smaller legs will make it less stable than the type of tripods that are used for shooting.

How far would you shoot is the question, because inside 350 or maybe 400 yards the wobble will be acceptable.

You would want to get it as low as possible and not use the center column extended.

If I could get to 400 yards with it, it would work for my uses. Or at least get me started and able to decide if I want to invest more into a more stable tripod.

Any budget friendly ball heads are recommended? I’ve been looking at the aziak front country, but not many reviews on it yet. Also looked at the leofoto handle bar head mh-36 i think? The anvil is not really an option at the moment.

I love the MH and run it for glassing and shooting. You can see how well it holds the rifle even with the weight behind it. And, the friction adjustment is very solid for glassing.

My buddy picked up a nice Slik, not sure the model. We were out yesterday and today.

I help guide for Cow elk on a veteran hunt every year and always have my guys shoot off a tripod. My guy this year killed his off my Slik 624 at 360. He said he never would have been able to without the steadiness of the tripod. I have several Manfrotos, shooting off the tripod or with a Hogsaddle, the Slik is good out to at least 500 for me. The lower you can keep it the better, but that's with any of them.

What kind of bag setup do you use?
I run an ultralight rear/front bag. There are several, but I own LS Wild, so run our bags. Ours is the lightest the last time I checked.

Feel free to PM me for a detailed conversation or to call me.

Instead of a glassing pad and pillow, I use our Triple S pillow. It gets triple duty, sitting, shooting, sleeping.

So. I always carry our 2-5 ultralight for rest/front bag (2.5 oz), SSS Pillow for glassing and positional support (7 os) and sometimes our ultralight plate if I am doing something dynamic like varmint hunting.

Sometimes I carry just the plate and use the 2-5 on it. The plate is sold separately.

If I am hunting with kids, sometimes I carry our Tacky Sack and drop it over the tripod head for them to shoot off their knee.

Yeah, you absolutely can. For shooting, the bigger the better. 30-35mm ball is a good compromise for weight/stability. Anything bigger than that is mismatched to the tripod and won’t give the benefits as with a heavier duty tripod.

Use Amazon, get it home and try it.

I like the lower and inverted type models. The MH motorcycle handle model from Leofoto is better than Anvil 30 for shooting and glassing IMO.
