Shoot2Hunt University

I was throughly impressed with your ability to shoot a wrong handed rifle. You’re the legend, I’m just Legand

Thank you! It was definitely a week full of learning and adapting. I was thankful to be able to glean some of your advice on shooting. I'll be keeping it in mind as I continue to progress.

I just finished the course and used a 6 ARC Tikka for much of it. I think it's a great option if you need a larger caliber for hunting but still want something you can train with comfortably.

I also used a .223 rental for a couple of days. I got more out of the course with the .223 due to the lower recoil, though the difference wasn’t huge.
.223 is great for high volume days anywhere you might find yourself. Like a S2H course. Or Serbia. Eh, Sasha?

How has your 6 ARC been feeding in the Tikka? Are you using M mags? I am really liking my Howa Mini in 6 ARC, but it’s definitely not a Tikka.

I used the following magazines:
  • S Mags: 6-round and 10-round versions
  • M Mags: 6-round
  • Mamba .223 mags: 10-round
One note: you can only load 5x 6 ARC rounds in a 6-round .223 magazine. Similar issue for 10-round .223 magazines.

I encountered issues with the .223 magazines - there wasn’t enough of the cartridge exposed for consistent loading, especially when the rifle and magazine got wet/dirty or when loading the last round. For the M mags, the rounds were shorter than the magazine slot, which sometimes caused them to get pinched or sit in awkward positions. I also tried an NDr .223 magazine, but it didn’t feed at all.

There may be some underlying issues with my rifle or possibly with the batch of Hornady 108gr ELDM ammunition I was using, which could have contributed to these problems.

I believe the solution is to use Waters 6mm magazines. I’m ordering some and will report back with results.

Did a little more digging. If anyone is interested. The overall load length (OAL) for the mags are:
- S Mags: 2.4"
- Waters 6mm: 2.6"
- M Mags: 2.835"

Would it be safe to assume that the “basic” RSS .223 Tikka is an 18” threaded barrel, Rokstok, and SWFA 6x scope? With suppressor of choice (I already have a Scythe, an OG, and a Griffin)?

What is the typical weight of the RSS .223 Tikka?

I went with 18” but plenty of guys do 20 or 16 as well. If you get an OG with a 20” barrel it’s the same as an 18” with 6 inch suppressor.

I looked at it that I could always cut it again but can’t add it back after. And was using a traditional suppressor at the time.

My RSS is 20”. I wish it was 16” and may just cut and thread it again to get it there. With the OG the 20” barrel is tolerable but with a normal can I really hate how it balances.

Y'all listen to my post shot routine on Cold Bore Challenge?

I'm not running to the buggy again!

PS: Don't forget to smash those like and subscribe buttons. There's a company that I can't name right now that manufactures rolls of 1" masking tape that is considering me for ProStaff.

@Gstew1930 says he wants to race again. He really “feels” he can win this time.

I’m really only replying to get to my 10 Rokslide comments so I can play classifieds. But I have thoughts. 1000 rounds of .223 @ $0.60 per round = $600. 1000 rounds of 6 ARC Hornady eld-match=$1350(midway USA). 1350-600=$750 or the equivalent of a factory tikka .223.
(My opinion) Everything you learn on a .223 translates 100% to shooting your “hunting rifle”. No need to shoot your hunting rifle to hone your skills with your hunting rifle.
Additionally, Forms .223 was the most delightful little gun I’ve ever had the pleasure of shootin. (Tikka,16” barrel, OG, wood rokstock light, swfa). I currently have a pile of gear I’m tryin to sell so I can fund my own.
The wood rokstock light, the 16” barrel, and the OG are non-negotiables for me at this point. I will own one.

Well done. I've added pushups to my routine when I forget to RTZ. Doesn't beat Form's sprints uphill in the snow, but gets the point across.

Thanks for the analysis, Shay, makes sense to me.

Everything you say makes sense, but I will argue with the costs you mention. The cost of another rifle, with optic, RokStok, etc. is quite a bit more than $750, but I can deal with that. I decided this morning that the wooden Rokstok is a non-negotiable for me as well.

I just really like my CZ and want to use it. But I also don’t want to spend $5000 on a shooting course and not get the most out of it because I have a perverse desire to do my way,

@Q_Sertorius and @Shaymos94, is there a reason why the wood stock in particular is non-negotiable for you?

Because it’s pretty.

I have spent the last month looking at Cerakote patterns and paint jobs and I just keep looking at the gorgeous wood.

I even asked my daughter to help me pick a color and showed her a bunch of swatches. She looked at them and then pointed at the walnut stock on my CZ and said, “you should get one that looks like that.” When even the 8-year old female mini-me says walnut, I know it’s the right answer.

To me, these are “hunting rifles.” I am going to sell them because I can’t suppress them without defiling them, but I want modern, suppressed rifles that fit this aesthetic.

That makes sense. I was curious if there was a performance reason behind the choice. I'm just getting into hunting so trying to educate myself. Thanks for sharing the perspective.
