I've recently seen several posts from guys who have ditched their stoves and have gone the no-prep-needed route as far as back country meals. I have to admit after a long hike and arriving in camp after dark I often don't feel like pulling out my stove and preparing dehydrated meals like MH. If you've gone the non prep route, would you mind sharing your non-prep favorites and how you get them ready for the trail? I'm doing a ten day next month so would appreciate some of your ideas that keep for a while as well... I would have put this thread in the "cooking in the wild" section but I'm looking for NON-COOKING ideas;)

Thanks for sharing!

Been focusing on this as well. Want to avoid MH as much as possible. The area I'm going in has some water but it can be hard to find, and there is no way I can pack 7 days of water in 6+miles. Subscribed!

Being border line diabetic and on pills, have to guard against sugar lows. Pop tarts one of my favs to pack wherever I go.

I have been doing my best to go "no cook" also. It's no problem in the warm months, but when it gets cold it's nice to have a hot meal. When it gets real cold everything turns into a Popsicle :)

Pop tarts for breakfast, pepperoni and string cheese wrapped in a tortilla for lunch, and a butthole sandwich for dinner is one option. Pouch Salmon and canned chicken is good too.

I have ditched the trail mix and replaced it with Macadamia nuts. They are like 200 cal per ounce, this makes up for the good stuff that is less than 100 cal per ounce.

Most of the backpacking foods are carb heavy, which is sugar to your body. I tend to get headaches after 24 hours of eating all these carbs. By incorporating more fats and proteins, like salmon and cheese I notice a difference. I don't get the processed food headache as much and I eat more.

Its still a war of weight vs. convience for me, but have started to mix things in. I think its impossible to go ultralight without relying on some dehydrated food. However, I found that I don't like to eat big meals while excercising/hunting so the more things I have around to snack on throughout the day the more calories I'm likely to take in. Although, not complete meals I've mixed these into my camping/hunting diet with good success.

Cooked bacon. In theory, it will last a week or so....but always seems to be eaten well before that. about 140 calories/oz
Honey stinger waffles. 160 calories/ounce and multiple flavors
Whole wheat tortillas. About 100 calories/tortilla
Cream Cheese packets. About 90-100 calories/oz
Individually Wrapped Cheese. Calories vary depending on size and cheese.
Home-made venison or beef peporni sticks. I like to make them caseless, and very lean.

Believe it or not, some bacon wrapped in a tortilla, with a little cream cheese makes for a damn good breakfast on the go.

What he said but add bacon.

For those of you who like the butt hole sandwich, try creamed honey instead of regular. It will keep your bagel from getting soggy. It's the same consistancy as the peanut butter.

Sounds good. I think I'm going to add these to the breakfast list this year!

Hot food and drinks is too much of a morale booster for me to ever consider leaving the stove at home...but we saw substantial rain turn to snow on our June and July backpacking trips this summer here in AK so I may be biased ;)

That said, on many days when the weather is a bit nicer we only use the stove to heat water for morning coffee and then again to heat water for MH. We typically have granola cereal with powdered milk for breakfast (just add cold water), and our daytime snacks rarely if ever require water or heat. We snack all day on everything from nuts or trail type mixes, to granola or Lara bars, to individually wrapped cheeses (mini baby bel with the wax last longest in warmest temps), to jerky, to tuna or chicken in foil packets, to peanut butter packets. In addition to tortillas or whole wheat pretzels, we sometimes bring along naan or whole wheat pita bread to add carbs. I suppose any combo of these options could be subbed for dinner if you were trying to go stove free...

I guessing that a butthole sandwich is some sort of bagel meal? Or am I missing something?

X1 on the SPAM single, hard salami, peanut butter with honey or chocolate, tortillas, flat bread, or bagels.
Usually I take Idaho instant flavored potatoes and heat water.

X3 on the spam. An added benefit is you can use it as fishing bait, they seem to love it too.

Another option is unless you are out all day eat the MH for lunch instead. I eat my lunch for dinner as often I'm too lazy and tired to mess with a stove.

x2 on the noon lunch. i dont do it a lot but it is an option. throw down a fuel tablet and set a cup on three rocks and make hot macaroni or ramen or any pasta.
no stove is needed but you usually need some foil for a windscreen. would work for mt house too, but i just add some dried burger to the pasta.
24 fuel tabs weigh 6 oz. but you only need to carry 2 or 3.

How long should some of that precooked chicken in a bag last after it's been opened? I've been thinking about making chicken and bacon tortilla sandwiches for lunches but I don't wanna catch the salmonella.
