Slept on the 25-06, and i shouldn't have.

Problem with the fast twist 25-06 or a 25 prc is it gets really high rpm when you start pushing the 60-80g close to 4K. Probably why the original twist for the 25-06 is 1:10

Until very recently, a 10 twist was perfectly fine for everything on the market. The 131 Blackjack came out maybe 10 years ago? I can’t remember exactly but it hasn’t been very long since the advent of 25’s that needed more twist

The first rifle I ever bought is a M70 Fwt classic in 30-06. For years I’ve been thinking about rebarreling it to 25-06ai. All the newer cartridges have delayed that plan slightly but it will happen at some point. Then I’ll be too old to hunt and my son will inherit a really nice rifle.

Related question for those with experience, would a 25-06ai fit a tikka long action well? Specifically with the heavy 130ish class bullets? I have a tikka 308 and a spare LA bolt stop….

I have a 25-284 shooting the 134 ELDM at 2900 in a 22" with H1000, but its a couple grains shy of the 25-06 and 25-06AI. In a Tikka action, to get this performance, I have to run a LA bolt stop and L mags. It shoots the 110 ELDX at 3143. The trajectory is essentially a wash inside 400 yards, although the 134 has a wind advantage.

Given how many guys are knocking deer and elk down with 6mm in the same weight and roughly the same velocity, you can't really go wrong with a 1:10 rig. You sacrifice some BC no doubt, but this doesn't come into play until you're out there a long ways. Also, if you have to run a 25-284, 25-6.5 PRC, or 25-7 PRC in a long action anyways to maximize capacity, the 25-06 AI is a more practical option that still benefits from the improved case shoulder for better brass life.
I've also considered the ai version. This gun loves the 115 BT, 115 Berger, and 100 TTSX. Nothing has walked away from any of those rounds.

I went down this road before I built my -284. To maximize case capacity/seating length with the 130s, you'll be at or exceeding the factory mag length. If you don't mind losing a little capacity, you can stick with the L mag and LA bolt stop. Or you can go with an aftermarket DBM and bolt stop. UM, Red Snake, and HCA may have a solution for you.

Here is the UM solution:

Alot of love here for the 25-06. I have two. One in a Ruger tang safety and the other in a mauser action. Could never decide which one to sell, so I kept them both.

I have a Ruger tang safety 25-06 as well that I just love. Shoots factory 100 TTSX’s sub moa at 3250 fps. I used that combo to kill this buck at 360 yards this past fall. It’s slowly becoming my go to rifle.
