Oh man, the guys got me started down the rabbit hole! After picking up a F1 frame and decided I wanted to customize a few things.
Bought a sewing machine and some odds and ends. Just got back from JoAnns fabrics. Got some strange looks in there! Wife now confirms that I have lost my mind. WTH, I’m gonna have fun.

Got my tie outs finished. Probably won’t put them up as high next time. Now that I am a teacher forced into break early I might order some material for another project to avoid going crazy. Stay safe and healthy.

Ended up with a Brother SE625. It was a compromise with the wife, she wants to embroider and quilt and I want to sew guy stuff.

I am running through all of the scenarios in my head for a 12 man tipi. I would like to find some heavier weight silnylon than the 1.1 oz, because I will not be using it for backpacking. I had trouble finding the 40d material online that is used for the seek outside stuff. I found 1.9 oz, but it did not look like it was silnylon and probably wouldn't be as waterproof. I saw you can get 1.6 oz silpoly, but it doesn't seem to be as strong, and with less stretch is more likely to separate at the seams.
I used 1.6 silpoly for my tut sized pyramid and it’s been great. Has stood up to several Wyoming storms (wind). It’s definitely a little easier to sew than the 1.1 silnylon with a few tarps and ponchos I’ve done. I think it’s a great alternative for bigger shelters.

After a long talking with my wife and browsing numerous reviews we decided to buy Singer heavy duty 4411. And the reason is because this machine dealing great with fabric and leather. So my wife using this machine about a month now and she already made some quilting stuff. And I still can't force myself to start sew boys stuff.

The 4411 and its siblings really are good machines for diy gear making. Pick up an even feed attachment for ripstop and slippery fabrics.

This is 1.3 oz pu nylon. Its a palace for 3 guys. 4 guys and gear is not a problem. Beauty of a tipi is if you do get any sag when it rains, you just raise the pole and it takes almost all of it out. But be warned, if you leave it like that and it gets sunny, that baby will be stretched tight as a drum. Hasnt caused a problem but it makes me nervous.

It is not as complicated as you might think. Use sketch up or pencil and paper to design. An octagonal tipi is just 8 triangles sewn together. You just need to figure out the dimensions of those triangles for the size and shape tipi you want. I designed mine with 45 degree walls to be a compromise of shedding wind and rain/snow. Sew panels together using a flat felled seam. Reinforce top where pole with go. Add a zipper and stake loops.

I used 1.3oz ripstop nylon.

hi woodbow,
very nicely said, but hardly done by me as a beginner:)
do you mean "a flat felled seam", like made in the first video below?
did you sealed your seams too?

i´ve also found a nice video on making tipi by Altitude Outdoors , how big is yours?
is it something like seekoutside 4 or 6 person tipi?

any other tips are very much appreciated! best of luck, and happy trails!

Yep thats the seam to use. It is similar in size to a seek outside redcliff. Mine is 15 feet diameter and 7.5' tall at the peak. Yes seam seal. You can buy a spray or dilute pure silicone with mineral spirits.

A tipi is a very easy project. Material size can limit your size of build. You will notice i had to add a panel to get the size i wanted because my fabric was only 60" wide. Adding that panel 8 times is a ton of extra sewing. If i do another i will play with adding more sides to get around having to splice that panel on the bottom.

It is just an immense amount of sewing and it gets to be a lot of material to manage when sewing.

I used cordura nylon. 500d or 1000d would both work.

is your 1.3 oz ripstop nylon also cordura, or any available PU nylon?
how many doors and vents?
cheers!

i´d like to buy a used seek outside 4 - person tipi bundle , but it´s hard to come by at this moment.
therefore, i´m thinking about this DIY project.
btw, your tipi must be as big as a hall ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

the weather is getting slightly colder, so hot tent camping in the woods would be great.
i ´ve already got a nice stove from winnerwell, but it´s been tested just once.
▀▄▀▄▀▄i love it!▄▀▄▀▄▀
