Good morning everyone.

Curious if anyone has any insight on how these two broad heads compare specifically for elk. I purchased 5 of the 1.75 hybrids and then read the 1.5’s are better for elk. I will be sharpening them from factory which should significantly increase the blade’s sharpness if that matters.

Also for reference here’s my setup. Curious if having the extra umph behind the arrow compared to others I’ve seen will help with penetration.

Lift 33 X
29” draw
77 lb draw
300 spine Easton Axis
475 total grains w/ 157g at the tip

I’m in I a similar boat, currently I have exodus and 1.5 sevr hybrids in the quiver. From my research I’ve seen basically two opinions. First there’s the “mechanicals are not acceptable for elk” crowd. And then there’s the more reasonable crowd that’ll state that mechanicals are acceptable if you have enough energy. You’re shooting plenty of energy for mechanicals (and either of the sevrs) and while the sevrs have their faults they are a very tough head which would make them one of the better choices for elk.

Looking forward to reading some good educated responses and good luck this fall!

I’ve seen a few of the “no mechanicals for elk” folks, mostly on YouTube. However in person in Colorado almost everyone I talk to uses mechanicals with success.

My take is that it’s an opinion held by people with lower poundage or draw length thus reducing the arrows momentum. Which is completely reasonable.

I shot an elk frontal with a sevr 2.0 and got more than 30 inches of penetration. I am not sure how much more, as I had to fish the arrow out of its body cavity. I shoot 30.5 draw and 70 lbs. If you shoot a similar setup I would use the 1.75 without hesitation.

I shoot the 2.0" for elk with a very similar setup.

That’s good to know, thank you. So hard to get good info online.

Some people say you need a fixed broadhead, others say I need a 250 spine despite all calculators pointing to 300.

Good to hear people with actual experience

You are prob really borderline on the 300 spine. I shoot a heavier arrow with less weight upfront and more weight on the back to shoot 300 spine with my setup. 250 spine would be easier to tune, IMO. A little stiffer arrow generally equals more forgiveness.

SEVRs didn’t impress me. One of my hunting partners didn’t like them either. The reason you hear so much jazz about SEVRs is that they’re under the Easton umbrella. Everyone that Easton pays to shoot their arrows, gets a cut of the SEVRs they push too. The SEVR heads perform great on John Lusk’s test. If I go cinder block hunting and need a mechanical because of high winds and open country, I might take one. They’re less than impressive on game.

Killed about 15 deer and a couple turkeys with them. Blood trails just weren’t that impressive from a medley of 2” and 1.5” SEVRs. I had an absolutely unexplainable deflection on a whitetail doe. The arrow basically turned 45 degrees on a perfectly broadside shot at ~12 yards from 20 feet up. I thought the deer was deader than a door nail after taking a couple hops, stopping behind a big tree. 10 minutes later she walked out and I put another arrow in the same entrance hole. That one performed as it should have and she went 35 more yards. Of over 100 bow kills, it’s without a doubt the weirdest, most extreme, and most unexplained deflection I’ve been a part of.

I also shot a bull elk with a SEVR 1.5 that I hit high in the lungs. Didn’t expect to find much blood, but found absolutely none. We listened to the bull fall about 250-300 yards from the shot 1.5 minutes post shot. We never found him or the arrow.

I’ve gone back to shooting grim reaper fatal steels or pro series mechs for everything. They just flat out work for me. The “watch them drop” slogan has rang overwhelmingly true for about 50 critters.

Hit the spine of the scapula or humorous join and they'll perform the same.

Double lung and they'll perform the same.

Go with the one you've already purchased imo.

Appreciate that. I have toyed with the idea of dropping down to 260, with the Axis they're so heavy though but it's manageable especially if I increase the weight to 80lbs
You’ll probably be fine, especially if sticking to mechanicals. If it tunes and shoots well, I wouldn’t worry about it. Just something to keep in mind, especially if you want to shoot fixed as well.
