This may be sacrilegious but is there a lightweight nest/bivy option out there for the silex when u need it that doesnt weigh 1lb or more??? Asking before I just bite the bullet and buy the seek nest....

I use the EE recon bivvy. I think it weighs 4 or 5 ounces. I bring a footprint from another tent or Tyvek if i'll be on rough terrain. I posted pictures further back in the thread.

I don't have any direct experience with the silex, or this nest but I do know that the sea to summit nano bug nest is 3oz for one person. Usually these nests and tarps are all pretty interchangeable. I would be shocked if there wasn't a simple way to string up most any nest in the silex.

You can also look at yama mountain gear, or mountain laurel designs. They offer nests in the 3-10oz range. There are a ton of options on the market. A 1lb single person nest is ridiculously overweight, don't feel bad for asking for a lighter alternative.

Pretty sure just about any bivy would work. I use a borah bivy in mine. I set up the Silex in my yard and then grabbed some paracord and started to tie them to some of the loops inside the silex. workds pretty well. My borah bivy weighs 8 oz.

You can save weight and money with a lightweight bivy .. BUT .. the Silex nest can setup just as part of the pitch, is 9 plus feet long, 44 plus inches in the middle .. and you can sit up in easy. I'm into saving weight, but IMO the nest is nice and so simple I don't stress it .. and its a nice roomy setup.

You can get to about a 2lb or less setup with full bug protection two ways with the Silex. The 30D Tent and a bivy , or the Dyneema and the nest. You an get to sub 2.5 with nylon and the nest.

The bivy is a little better for running a stove, and with a stove yes you can have a sub 3 lb hot tent with the bivy and stove

The paracord to the loops inside the silex...is that to keep the bivy from laying directly on your body?

If you were to use a Bivy that has loops then yes. It all depends on the Bivy.

I use a Jimmy Tarps Bivy in my Eolus sometimes. I think it weighs 6oz and the top can be tied up off your face. its nylon on the bottom, half m-95 and half mesh on the top with a center zipper.

I've used a Borah bug bivy in mine. I rig a dryline between the handles of the trekking poles and use a mini carabiner to attach the shock cord from the bivy (keeps the mesh off your face).

Really the only time I use the bivy is sleeping on a short cot truck camping. The nest is well done. Solid roof to prevent condensation drips, dual doors, pitches with the tent so less fiddle factor. It works really well.

Not sure actually. Typically the stove jack ads 3 -4 ounces. So for nylon, about 1.5 lbs total with cordage.

My sill version with PU material seem sealed in the stuff sack with stakes and cordage less stove jack comes in at 28.05 on my scale.

I don't have any of it pitched without the canopy. I'll add that to my list.

Here is how it works . It is about 9.5 ft long , so you have room at head and foot to store extra gear . It works surprisingly well as the narrow ends tend to hold things like pillows in place (at least for me). It is wide in the center so sitting up is easy . It’s dual entrance so side you get in does not matter . It can be left attached to silex and pitches all at once .

For reference I’m 6’3. With the pad centered in the diamond, I can place my size 13 feet on top of each other and barely touch the side of the tent. With my head on a pillow, I can put two Fists on top of my face before touching the side. If I pulled the guy outs taut at head and feet, it would add at least an inch, maybe 2.

that pad is 76” long as well for reference
