I’m going to go against the grain and the 6.5manbunn crowd, and suggest .308.

Infinite factory or reload options, crazy low recoil (even less with a brake or silencer) and plenty of energy out to moderate distances.

Also would do better as a backup elk gun than 6.5 with the ability to use heavier bullets.

Only to about 250 yards at which point the 6.5 CM begins to overtake it (general statement and individual cartridges can easily change the equation - both ways). That is about the distance my 6.5 CM begins to overtake my 308 Win on all applicable metrics. I have 308 Win and will likely never part with it; it has proven itself on animals up to free-range water buffalo. But if I had to do it all over again, I'd have gone with a 270 Win (whole other converation) instead of that 308.

A 6.x variant (both .0 and .5) would pair very nicely with the 300 WSM. Can always add a Limbsaver and/or low recoil ammo.

Then there's Form's thread on 223...

There’s no real line but I’m an adult and I know I’d rather shoot a hunting weight rifle in 6 creed right now than 6.5.

I started deer hunting with 12 gauge slugs that kick harder than any rifle I currently own. I was happy to have it and shoot (mostly at) deer with it but I sure dreaded shooting paper with it. Can’t say this has anything to do with it but I still have to focus on follow through or I’m flinching hard still today. Recoil just sucks and a 6mm should be plenty for hogs or deer.
Ah, yes, I remember the pain of target day with 3" 12ga slugs vividly. It's easy to complain about rifle recoil now that I haven't shot slugs in over a decade.

As far as OP's question. I'd go with one of the 6mm/.243 options or a 6.5CM. 6CM might be the most talented balistically of the 6s, but 243 will be cheaper ammo and easier to find by a mile with very little downside.
