I'm trying to find out what depth to seat 212-grain eld-x bullets in my 300 win mag. I have a Sako 85. Was surprised at how long the bullet measured to reach the rifling as it came out at 3.685 inches. Was going to try .020 shorter? Was also surprised that it still feeds well at that length from the magazine. Thanks!!

If feeding from a mag is important, start at the longest length that allows and work from there. I generally start at 5 thou off and test from there

Ditto as said above. I've got a bergara 300 win, shooting 200 gr eld-x. Im shooting 3.8 something. I'd have to look. Fits mag, chambers, so I shoot it.

Was surprised at how much free bore there was. Think I will try .020 as it was jammed a bit into the rifling, and work my way in.

I'd focus on the bearing surface being seated at least a calibers depth into the case neck. To me that's more important than being an insignificant distance from the lands.

Pretty sure it overlaps completely, I cut the end of the case on one side to gauge the depth.
