Thinking about a cheap gaming console for the kids, 6-12 years old. Basic games like Mario kart, etc. Maybe a used one?

My niece & nephew have one that has all the classic games on it. It’s a big $$ saver for my brother with all those games
If you hook it to the Internet you can stream as well

Mario, donkey kong, pokemon, and other more “kid” games are going to be nintendo properties- so you will be limited to a nintendo console (wii, wii U, or switch) the switch currently has some decent sales for Christmas (I think about 300$ but includes mario cart) - rumor has it Nintendo’s next gen consoles will release around fall of next year.

Depending on the game you are playing, the switch comes with two half remotes (can be used together or separately) that would each be usable for kids which is kind of nice. Another set of remotes is around 70$ I believe.

Rigging up an emulator on a cheap computer is another option and you would basically get unlimited free games but it may be a bit harder for kids to operate by themselves.

A wii U might be a good option too, I have no idea what the market on them looks like. It would have stuff like mario, mario cart, etc.

If you’re wanting games, like Mario kart or any other Mario based games that’s going to limit you to Nintendo based consoles. Nintendo hasn’t kept up Sony and Microsoft on the gaming platforms.
Xbox X/S and PlayStation 5 are the current Gen consoles. Xbox one and PlayStation 4 are still very good consoles, but are considered last Gen.
I’ve had really good luck buying refurbished gaming consoles.

It’s a good thing to think about before jumping in. I wish someone would have told me to carefully consider not getting one for mine. Depending on the kid(s), it can be all consuming and really hard to cut loose of. The stimulation to the brain is like heroine.

We are going through this for Christmas. Kids are 7 and 9. We are going with the Nintendo Switch bundle on Amazon for $299.

It will be a part of the kids allowed screen time.

We'll probably buy the extra controllers so we can play against them.

I bought a Nintendo switch for my son a few years ago. I’ve had a lot of fun playing Mario cart with him. He can kick my trash every single time! lol we even purchased the steering wheel controllers later to give me an edge and it still didn’t work. He takes it on trips and keeps him entertained in the car during those long boring stretches. He is 12 so he also plays games on his phone.

We bought him an Xbox last year and it’s in his room. We have a screen time limit with everything.

#1 burgers are for red meat not turkey
#2 play outside in the snow without a jacket like God intended.
fried a turkey for thanksgiving. Killed it at king Soopers place. It was mediocre. Turkey burger was 10 times better.

Taking the oldest out for her first elk hunt tomorrow. Planning on bringing a jacket and hand warmers. I’m ready for it…let me have it!

My buddy just got a Miyoo Mini and likes it. Brought it on our MT hunt, didn't end up using it but one night briefly. Don't know much about it, but for $80 seems like a low risk option.

Niece killed her first elk today. Pretty cool being there with both my brothers and her. Don’t worry, we grew up with a Nintendo and my nieces have one too. We still like to get out do things outside but one of my best memories with my brothers was us beating Bowser on the old NES.

Whatever you do, have them film it and post to YouTube. Gain a following and start monetizing.

Friend’s son’s friend makes mindcraft YouTube videos (literally just him playing mindcraft). Earns $40k/video … kid has some serious cash flow.

We went with used handhelds (game boy and DS) to start. We limited and put conditions on use. The older systems were great as they could purchase used games for under $10, were a low cost way to introduce them to gaming, and they were able to save towards and purchase a switch on their own. At 15 and 13, we still limit/monitor use. They still get outside, still hunt, and can carry on a conversation without being distracted by a screen.

I got my kids a Wii that had been modded with a bunch of classic Nintendo games on it. It was as fairly inexpensive and they loved it!

Nintendo switch has all the Mario games, and can be a handheld system and connected to tv easily. Can apply limits to time per day.

Games are ~$60 each.
Nintendo Switch is the way to go. Plus, with only two controllers and the right games, you can play with 4 people. Mario Party gets a lot of play in my house and is fun for parties.
