I’m down in Mearns country but since they’re down this year I’m trying to focus and scalies. Been having a tough go at it, I tried a bit last year with no success and that trend is continuing. I’m trying to the foothills with yellow grass and mesquite, but in a see of it and warmer weather it’s hard to figure out where they’re located, for me and the dogs. Any general guidance is appreciated here or if you’d prefer to reach out privately. Thanks gents 🤙🏾

Depending on where you are in arizona, gambel's may be your easier backup plan.

When I lived down there my very general rule of thumb was prickly pear and mesquite for gabel's, scrub oak along the boarder in the hills for mearns, and short grass prairie for scaled quail.

That rule of thumb is general and not a hard rule. I have found mixed coveys of each combination where the cover and range overlap.

Headed home, last hike before I hit the road I finally turned up a covey and took one bird. Maximum effort, and good dog work made it happen. For those who reached out, thank you. Didn’t happen to come from those areas ( I tried) feel free to reach out and I’m happy to share.
