My sawyer mini has worked good so far. I run mine close to the bladder as opposed to the bite valve for a few reasons- it's harder to freeze when it's in your pack, not bouncing off your shoulder all day long, and it still works the same as far as gravity filtering etc

I've heard they clog easily with silty water so I'm back flushing it after every trip

Any issues getting head pressure with the filter up high? We about turned our lips inside out trying to drink thru the straw with the sawyer 3 way inline up by the bladder. No way we could gravity filter that way. Maybe the mini works differently?

Becca,

I haven't tried the 3 way, but I believe sawyer states that the 3 way is a million gallon filter whereas the mini is only a hundred thousand gallon. Correct me if I'm wrong. If this is true, I would guess that there is a difference in the filter element or micron rating that is making the 3 way harder to filter thru.

I've got my mini about 8" from the bladder and 2' or so from the bite valve and there is no problems gravity filtering or just plain drinking out of it without the bladder elevated. To fill my nalgene It only takes about 2-3' of head pressure and it will fill it in a minute or two.

The main reason I want that thing inside the pack is because it's a pain in the butt to get the bite valve thru the slot on my pack with the filter on that end. I would have to take it all apart every time I wanted to remove it from my pack

I'm sorry, I just realized that when I'm gravity filtering I really only have 1-2' of head pressure at the filter depending on how full the bladder is

I went ahead and put in some quick disconnects to show this as an example setup. The plan with this setup is for my first hunt this fall for caribou. I will have my father with me along with one or two other guys. Since we will be close to clear running streams, I can pull my bladder and use it to fill the others.

Here is a video on Google plus that shows the flow rate with the source bladder hanging and the receiving bladder on the ground. Granted, this is just hose water and I will see if I can get down to a creek to do a test with some nastier stuff. I apologize if you can't see the video. When I get some better tests with some thicker water I will make sure to upload them to youtube.

what sawyer did you have? theres several

I have the squeeze. The bags are worthless as well. I ended up switching them out for platypus with much better luck until the filter went south. The mini does look cool but now that I have a bad taste with the company. I'm out. Hope you have better luck then me.

i now carry a 2ltr platy big zip with my sawyer mini instead of the useless sawyer bags. Worked great as a squeeze bag or gravity system this year during back country archery season
