Savage Accutrigger

Hey all,
So I have a Savage FS116 300 WINMAG that I bought brand new about 20 years ago or so. I bow hunt most of the time, but have been able to pick up some late season tags here and there. Sight it in no problem at the range with the lead sled etc. However, that long false trigger has caused me to miss a few deer. I never adjusted the pull on it, but if you tighten or lighten the pull, does it make that False trigger disappear? My last buck I shot, I had to mentally keep reminding myself to get through the false trigger and hold steady.
Before that I had a Remington 7MM that was dead to nuts as soon you pulled onto target. I love this gun, just not the trigger so much.

The false trigger pull is kind of the entire point of the accutrigger. With that in place you can lighten the actual pull weight without increasing the risk of an accidental discharge. Its possible to shorten the false/set trigger pull with a little home brew gunsmithing. That said I have MK II 22 plinker that the trigger would annoy me as well so I used a center punch to make a stop/bump in the set trigger that holds it about halfway back. Its just a 22 plinker but it definitely improved the trigger feel.

Thanks a bunch. I get the fact that it is supposed to give you that set trigger feel. But, yeah in the heat of the moment, it can be annoying lol. I went to scout sniper school in the Marine Corps, and when you are engaging multiple targets, I could see that really getting in the way. Might want to look at a new rifle or have a custom trigger placed in.

You can adjust the accu-trigger, not at all difficult and I had done that with my first rifle which was equipped with one. Official Savage website - How to

I had a 7mm Rem mag in a 110 model and loved the trigger. I actually felt that I shot better with that than any other gun I have. I equate it to a set trigger on a muzzle loader. I sold the 7 mag due to it being way more rifle than I need and replaced it with a 110 in 7-08 and feel just as happy with that one.

I think you might be overthinking it, maybe not as we are all different in our likes/dislikes. Trigger 'touch' and feel is critical so if it doesn't work for you, then you should look at other options. I guess in the moment, that first shot is supposed to count and I love that aspect of the trigger. I can see if follow-up shots are necessary, regardless of situation, perhaps the mental aspect and 'feel' would be an issue that may slow your reaction/firing time and throw the whole thing off.

I've shot hundreds of rounds though my 110s, both calibers, and I would buy another Savage with the accu-trigger without a worry. That's purely my experience. Go with what make you feel the most comfortable.

a lot of people like the accutrigger, but I couldn't stand it either. Jard, Timney, Rifle Basix, and ELF are all good options for replacement and it's an easy job. I put and ELF in my savage and I like it far better than the accutrigger

+1 for rifle basix, I've put in 3 now and it way outdoes the stock trigger.

You’ve already got some good info, one more thing to consider. You can buy a target Accutrigger spring and it’ll get you to where you can get the overall pull weight down to near a pound. I think I purchased mine at gun shack, and I think there’s other places that sell them. If I remember it, it’s about a five dollar spring I bought a few because it was so cheap and the shipping didn’t go up.

I’ve got one on my budget long range 308 trainer mod 10FP, and it works for me.

Some tie the sear, the middle blade, back, and I’ve even heard of some taking 1/32 off the top of the sear. I’ve not felt I needed to try either of those. There’s a lot of info on the Internet about this if you search it.

There’s nothing wrong with an aftermarket either. I really like the Timney I have on an old 721.
