Hey guys. I am looking to pick up a cheaper, reliable rifle for my teenage sons to hunt deer with in SE MN (next season) and also in the hill country of Wisconsin. I came across this deal at Cabelas - https://www.cabelas.com/p/savage-ar...ion-rifle-with-vortex-diamondback-scope-combo

Is this something I should stay away from? Anything better or equal for the same kind of money? I was thinking of getting it in a .270 - but not sure what caliber is best. I know the 6.5 has been popular as well. I would like something with enough power but not much recoil. I currently have several shotguns and also a 7mm rem mag Tikka T3x lite that I will be using.

I appreciate any thoughts/help! I do not have much rifle knowledge!

Most Savages will shoot well.
1) Assume you will throw the scope away. They are very cheap and need to be replaced.
2) That model comes with a flimsy plastic stock. I prefer the models that come with their "AccuStock." It doesn't flex.
3) That rifle was made to hit a value point. I would always avoid base models like it regardless of manufacturing.

I looked at their sale list. The Tikka, the CVA, and the Ruger American 2's are better deals.

Thanks for the info - the scope did not seem very good...
