Hey guys, I've got a Savage 10ML-II that was my grandfathers. I've had it now for 12 years and finally running out of powder for it.

The gun has been great and I've killed at least a dozen deer with it ranging from 50-150 yards.

My previous load setup was as follows:

250gn XTP .452 or 250gn FTX
Knight high pressure sabot .451-.452
38gns of IMR4227

That being said I need to look into a new powder. I still have plenty XTP and FTX 250gns. I'd like to stay with these until I use them up.

My local guys have some N120 but I don't have any experience with that.

Is that a decent powder to push the Hornady bullets I mentioned?

Any recommendations is appreciated.

My accuracy load is 44.0 gr of AA5744 behind a 300 gr SST in a black sabot. This yields me 2,000 fps. I’ve taken deer out to 200 yards.

AA5744 is very easy to ignite and works well. It’s not the fastest but is probably the most reliable.

I really cant imagine a worse load than such a light load of 4227. First off its harder to ignite. The powder was made for high pressure pistol loads and is not well suited for loose fit light bullets in 50cal.

Use 39-42gr of N110 or upto 44gr of 5744. Both will give reliable ignition with a 250gr.

Or he could just ask right here. Rather rude posting something like that for a competing forum when we got plenty of SML shooters here.

Dougs has been very slow for ages btw.

GMB, I am not doubting your knowledge.

Thanks to people like Rick Bibby, Doug's became the premiere Smokeless muzzleloader web site for years with its extensive load data base.
