Sauer 404 hold zero after barrel swap?

I've been looking at blasers and Sauer 404s.

I like the looks of the Sauer and some of the features they have.

Does anyone have experience with a Sauer 404 and if so, did it legitimately hold zero after removing and reinstalling the barrel? Verified by at least 10-20 shots to get the real zero?

The ones I have seen have been as good as the Blasers. That is to say perfect.

Big enough sample size you'd feel comfortable dropping money on either mfg?

Biggest downside to both of these are the barrel prices and twists of the 22's

I have more use and experience with Blaser, and I personally believe it to be a better rifle system; however, would use a 404 without issue if that suited.

Same. I feel the blaser is a better system. But that said I wouldn't hesitate to hunt with a 404 and have confidence in it after a barrel swap.

There is a feller on Blaser Buds forum who has stated the best shooting bullet out of his R8 .223 factory barrel are 77 TMKs (despite the twist). Maybe he is just lucky with that barrel.

There are two US based suppliers of aftermarket barrels for R8. One is less than reliable and the other has a very long turnaround. I’m running a 7 twist 22CM from the former.

That is good to know. I was looking at the r93 too , primarily because it's a bit lighter, but blaser doesn't make any barrels for those anymore and as far as I know there's no aftermarket mfgs.

I'd be worried about the same thing happening with the r8 at some point, but I guess is less of an issue if there are some US mfgs for r8 barrels.

I wouldn't buy a barrel from either American based barrel outfit. One is crooked and the other doesn't always produce the best product and takes a long time.

I have 3 R8's, and I have owned both a 202 and a 404, the 404 is not a system where you can shoot a 375 at a buffalo walk back to the truck and switch to a 308 and change the scope and go warthog hunting. Each barrel needs to be sighted in. There will be a shift, as the scope mount is not attached to the barrel.

The R8 is the answer if that is your question.

There are tons of aftermarket stocks for Blasers based out of Europe.

Barrels twist is the Blaser grey area where people that shoot 700 clones at long range get butt hurt. I am one of those people.

I still prefer the Blaser to anything else.

Saying that Blasers are heavy, if you want a lightweight rifle it cannot be built on an R8. A k95 the single shot is available and weighs 5 pounds.

Well, I guess I got lucky. I’m running a 22CM barrel from the “crooked” guy. It’s as accurate as my Blaser factory barrels.

I would try the Blaser .223 barrel with 77 TMKs and if they don’t shoot well then try 73 ELD-Ms

I don’t necessarily know that I agree that it’s a better system it’s a different system if you’re looking for easy changeability back-and-forth Blaser is way better if you want a traditional moral for the Sauer is way better. There is nothing traditional about a Blaser. Requires a paradigm shift in the way that you do things and the way you think about things.

Old thread but here goes

Barrel swap is the same on both R8 and 404 with neither being quicker or slower. 404 owner here but the R8 are better in fact that the scope fits on the barrel and not the receiver as on the 404. Each 404 barrel swap ( lets say 7mm rem mag and putting a 300 win mag your scope will need to be sighted in as the scope is not sitting on the barrel but the receiver of the 404 and there will be a shift )

Way around, all 404 users have two scopes for their barrels which are sighted in to that particular barrel.

Main reasons for the 404 purchase was the decocker and the way rifle suited me. Have handled an R8 but for me the 404 suits me better ohh and a warning anything extra you want you will pay good $$$$ for it same as on the R8

Not in normal use that I have seen, though my mountain hunting experience with them is limited. I have not tried checking zero retention after drops.

The Blaser mounting system is pretty solid. I’ve abused them with airline baggage handling going to hunt last year in MT mountains with some hard knocks going down scree field during the hunt- held zero.

I throw the gun on truck floorboard going to range- no issues.

Drive along trails in UTV - no issues.

Remove from gun and remount- no noticeable change in zero.

If Sauer 404 mounted the scope on the barrel and had a wider selection of calibers they would be on par, but still not a straight pull what blaser wins on
