I’m going to buy a saltwater reel for snook/redfish. I’d like to stay under $150 but $200 is the most I’d spend if there’s something really worth it.. at the top of my list is the shimano spheros 40 class.. what do y’all think?

I had some older Daiwa Regals that held up well, and the cabelas salt striker is good for price. In the 150-200 range I’d definitely look at penn which I’ve used but not owned.

Penn Battle III is a good one for a decent price, can't beat it for around 100 bucks. Shimano Stradic is one in a mid tiered price ($200). The Shimano Saragosa is another popular spinning reel in the saltwater group...but usually I see those in the 4000 plus sizes for off shore stuff.

I use Shimano 4000 class spinners (Sedona) with 30# braid and 25# mono leader. My 2500 size reels (Sienna I think) get 8-10# mono.

They are 12 years old, saltwater use only, and have never done a thing to them other than rinse em after a fishing trip. No complaints and never thought I needed anything "more" for what I use em for.

I use Ugly Stik rods mostly. Really like their 1-piece SS guides.

I was planning on getting a 2 piece ugly stick so I can put it in my luggage

Fiblink on Amazon. Can't beat them for travel rods. Cheap too.
Those look good, are they pretty durable? I left ugly stick once and bought a $150 rod once and it snapped on the first hook set.. I’ve never used anything else since then

Daiwa BG’s are really hard to beat and usually run around $100. If you want to nerd out on it, here you go.

I think I have 7 of them now, no issues. I rinse them off after saltwater use but have not torn down and greased any of them in 4 years. I don’t get to fish quite as much as I used to though.

I have 2500’s for normal inshore stuff and a pair of 3500’s for my “heavy“ setups.

I have a shimano spheros 3000 o could probably part with. It’s a saltwater reel but I’ve never used it in saltwater.

looks like brand new ones are 130-150 dollars, Ive used it ~ 10 times and have another reel I can use, I could sell it for 100 shipped, but the box would be for a different reel. its a good reel, like I said, I've never had it in the salt.

I just took two to Florida. I think they're made out of carbon fiber so they should be more durable than graphite...not sure about fiberglass rods. Me and my dad and FIL all run them. They've treated us great. I get the 4 piece 7 footer and 10 footer for surf action. We haven't had any problems.

Quantum inshore or shimano Sedona. My wife’s family is from Florida and that is what they use for Inshore. I’ve caught several fish on them. They are awesome

Braid or mono? I use power pro in freshwater but I’m not sure what I should use for inshore… I live nowhere near salt so I’m trying to get my stuff together

We always use the Cabela’s salt striker without any issues. I’m not sure if they make them anymore but a couple of them lasted me a decade or more.

I use 15 lb power pro on my light salt water rods. Depending on what I'm fishing I'll also use a 20 lb fleuro leader. Salt water fish seem to be more sensitive to visible line...or maybe the water is clearer not sure which.

My surf rod gets minimum of 40 lb line. I think 80 lb is necessary in some states if you're targeting sharks.
