I am a college student in Western Carolina University. I recently have done some scouting in the Pisgah and Nantahala Forests for the upcoming season. I have a roommate that is older and has lived here for awhile and he warned me about going way out in the mountains. He said he has heard of people going missing due to people that live in the mountains messing with them and what not. He isn't the kind of person to mess with someone about this kinda stuff and he hunts as well. I know that you should always be careful but is there any extra concerns that I should know about. I have done lots of hunting in the flatter part of eastern NC as well as north Florida so I'm not ignorant to the dangers of hunting. Anyway, just wanted to know what yall think of this as well as anything else related to it. It has just made me kinda nervous now to out. Thanks for any input.

Your risks are what you would expect. Getting lost, getting wet and cold, getting hurt. Unless people are different there? The only time I worry about other people messing with stuff is at the trailhead where you might run into tweakers.

The movie 'Wrong Turn' comes to mind, or 'The Hills Have Eyes'. In all seriousness though. Not many people want to mess with armed hunters in the middle of nowhere. Now if you are a pleasure hiker or mountain biker, that would be a better target.

Appalachia can be a strange region, but you’ll be armed. Just tell someone your plan and when you should be expected to return.

It's just like any other part of Appalachia you hunt biggest concern is the enterprising locals...growers will be gone by 1st frost and liquor running fellas are usually gone with the leaves. Just pay attention...there are couple smells that stop my in my tracks when I am in the woods..mash cooking off and fresh growing weed are on that list.

Leave a note on your dashboard with a current pic stating if not back by a certain time/date someone should come looking for you

No sir born and raised in WV still own a property there and hunt it every year..takes a Creeker to know a Creeker....

In my experience most of cookers and shooters I have ran in to are usually in their cars at the head of the holler...they dont venture out in to the woods much..YMMV

Also at least here in wv or va, the drugvuse is kind of in certain areas. Where i live now i have no worries at all. Back home in mcdowell county i would not leave a 5 dollar bill laying in the floorboard, csuse tjey would bust a window just to get it

I've run into a few "shady looking characters", mostly near roads or trail heads, I make it a point to approach them and have a chat, all have been really friendly despite their appearance.

I was mainly worried about weed farmers or shiners but I didnt really think of tweakers. Thanks for yalls imput.
