I would do a 10% non refundable down payment to get in on the first shipment with the balance due within 5 days of notification that they are ready to ship. Any that don't get paid for become retail available at full price. But in all reality, I'd hate to listen to people cry about how they haven't seen their order yet so maybe they should just buy what they can afford and force us to fight gladiator style for them.

Yeah, there's no guarantee everyone that wants one gets in on a pre-order, either. Intentionally or unintentionally, creating a feeling of exclusivity or something that's hard to get will drive demand.

Then resale goes up and it's easy to justify price increases. And the people that have them, will rave about them more because they have the unobtainable.

Just look at mavens. When people had to work hard to get them at each restock, everyone loved them and they got sold at or above msrp. Since they've been in stock for a year +, people are dumping them for various reasons, including a turret that spins too easily.

I'm happy with my RS1.2's, but the whole turret thing has me less willing to try something new because it demonstrates the craziness you point out and lowers my trust of the recommendations overall.

Some of the Maven bit is the owner insulting us as a user group has destroyed any desire to be loyal.

s2h would derisk the first run completely with a presale. email sign up, pay, order and those buyers get their scope 6 mos later.
unless there is a max qty for the initial order imposed by ZT or LOW, a presale would allow for everyone who wants (and is willing to pay for one to be included). otherwise, availability could be choppy for a while depending on broader demand and s2h's decision to have in-stock inventory vs backorders/future drops/group buys.
