Alright guys I’m looking for some setup advice. I like what I’m seeing on here with smaller cartridges and want to take a swing at it. I have a T3x Lite Stainless 6.5 cm ordered from my local shop.

So far I’m thinking cut and thread barrel at 18”? Nightforce NXS 2.5-10 or SWFA 6x42. UM Pic rail and rings. I would like to find a chassis or stock with adjustable length of pull as my wife and kids will probably use this some also. Going to run suppressed but I’m waiting for some of the suppressor companies to run a deal so nothing set in stone there.

Advice, input, and suggestions are appreciated.

If I was starting from scratch again, I would buy two rifles. A 223 and 65 Creedmoor. Both Tikka of course. I would buy the unknown, munition Tikka rings (no rail), and a rokstok for each rifle. I would top it with the maven or SWFA, or even a Trijicon . The biggest thing is to get a first focal plane mill scope. I love the night force, but even the mill I believe is the second focal plane.

My reason for going this route is two fold. First, you will have a trainer gun and a hunting gun that are operationally the same. All your muscle memory and practice from one of the other would translate to the other. Second is that ultimately you will get to the set up anyway, and while you think it might be more expedient to do it step-by-step pulling the Band-Aid off and not trying to go piecemeal is a much better way to go forward, in my opinion.

As far as the can goes, not something I have a lot of experience with given the fact that I am in California, so Can’t own one personally.

kid to wife to you is a tough adjustment. how big is your kid? if they are older you could probably just get a compact stock and make it work or Hnt26 starts at 2.5 lop. but If rly young might prefer a chassis. id make the 6.5cm your dedicated rifle (since it has more recoil) puti it in a rokstock and set the 223 up for everyone. id get a couple SWFA 3x9s before they go out of stock for 2 years again for adjustability, a chassis with a buffer tube style setup probably your best bet. something like the XLR tr2 buttstock with a XLR, outlier, or ultradyne chassis. the more you wanna spend the lighter it gets. or I am experimenting with a 6 position at buttstock with the outlier chassis but the cheek riser isn't as adjustable and recoil management is much better in the tr2. only issue is the tr2 chassis setup is its likely going to be in the 10-11lb range, so depends if you want to hunt with it that might be something to consider. but if just short walks sxs to blind might not be an issue. can easily clamp into tripod too. something also unique about the buffer tube is you could do a buffer tube setup for kids/wife and buffer tube setup for you as well if you wanted. like you could do the tr2 for them and folder adapter and XLR smoke buttstock or Samson folder with adpater for you if you rly wanted to splurge. or mdt carbine composite if you wanted more adjustability for you on a budget. the possibilities are kind of endless

When I was looking for an adjustable lop solution for my Howa mini 6.5 Grendel for my grands, the MDT LSS worked well. They make it for Tikkas too.

It takes an AR butt stock and grips. I put a magpul ctr, I believe, on it. Adjustable lop with a friction lock so no wobble. Works very well. Can adjust lop in seconds for shooters.

Main warning, the metal fore end sucks when cold. Some sort of soft grip tape helps a bunch.

I would suggest running the #xs before chpping the barrel too short. I chopped my 223 to 18" and I hit 1807 fps (at sea level) at 350 yards. I was wanting to run the rifle out to 400 yards. This year I had a shot at 407 yards and I watched him for about 20ish minutes and then he trotted to within 48 yards (head shot). I did not miss out on that deer... but had he trotted in a different direction, I would have. I love a short suppressed rifle, but don't take it too short!

As far as suppressors go, Silencer central has the banish 30 with the tax stamp paid for about $870. You can run it in the long or short configuration. I paid over $1000 for mine and love them.

I was thinking about the banish 30. Glad to hear you like yours. The Tikka might have the shorter threaded barrel from factory. If that’s the case I won’t cut it down and rethread. Just have to weight and see when it gets in.

How’s the recoil difference between the two? Can a difference between noticed or are they just both really low recoils? Mainly referring to 223 vs 22cm, not show much on the stock design difference which I know reduces felt recoil further

Definitely can feel the difference in recoil, as you’re going from 26g to 40g of powder, but basically the same bullets, within 5g.

223 has about 4 ft lbs of recoil and the 22 CM about 7. Both are ridiculously easy to shoot and spot your impacts.

When my kid was small I used a Boyds At-One. It's quick and easy to adjust the LOP with it. Pretty inexpensive also.

I would get the Sportsmatch rings. Less expensive and they work well.

No it isn't. Unless you live in the restricted zone in southern michigan.

Two tikkas, one trainer, one main is an appropriate thought process. If you can’t secure rokstoks, KRG echo seems to be the next best replacement for the stock configuration. But if you just get the 6.5 creed rolling, you’ll be just fine. I’d also recommend the bolt and shortened bolt handle from UM.

The SWFA is hard to beat honestly. Until UM gets around to actually getting their scope out- you really can’t go wrong with a 3-9. The gen 2 6x is supposed to be out but who knows with their lead times.

For suppressors, check out pewscience. Don’t get disappointed by subpar suppressors that you get stuck with for life (I am now stuck with three subpar suppressors that don’t sit on any guns). The resilient jolene s is a great suppressor at a good price. I personally wouldn’t touch anything by silencer central given the wide array of fantastic suppressors on the market.

I hunt both zones but I read that as .22 caliber and everything smaller including rimfire being illegal. Maybe I should email the DNR for clarification.

You can email them. It's quite clear though. Any caliber except 22 or smaller rimfire. We've been using fast twist 223/223ai and 22-250/22-250ai's for the last 20+ years on deer.

For small to larger shooter adjustability, I recently picked up a KRG ECHO; it only takes a little bit to shorten the LOP and move the comb up or down. So far I am liking it very much. While I like AICS mags, I appreciate the option to run near flush mount OEM Tikka mags with the ECHO.

It's the second rifle from left in the picture. I apologize that it's not a better pic of the ECHO alone, but I'm away from home and it's the only one I have on my phone.
