“Rokslide Special” .223 Training ammunition?

I'm pretty new to Tikkas - what's the bottom metal setup you have going on with yours?

I milled the factory Tikka inlet out to a CTR inlet in order to switch to an MDT Hunter AICS bottom metal and Accurate Mag AICS mags.

Got time to test a few ammo types in a 16" factory Tikka .223 today, conditions could have been better but really just was trying to find more ammo that this rifle and AR liked. AR has been zeroed & shot primarily with 77 gr Bonefrog TMK for the last year with no issues, this TIkka with 77 gr IMI mk 262 77 gr OTM before changing the stock out for a Rokstok. I skipped the last few 55 gr FMJs listed, as snow/wind had picked up quite a bit and wasn't expecting much from them anyways. Velocities were pulled from a Garmin, weather was ~30* at 8,000' elevation. 8500' DA, winds 8-15 mph avg, variable direction.

Hornady 73 gr ELDM
Hornady 55 gr VMAX
Hornady Black 62 gr FMJ
Frontier 68 gr BTHP

V-max load looks best, but mk262 stuff ain’t bad.

Both rifles have been 1-1.3 MOA with the loads they are zeroed with. I was happy to find that VMAX grouped so well, there's some (relatively) expensive coyotes rotting around here that could've taken a VMAX instead of something 77 gr.

And as for the paint, if you aren't good at least you can look good!

@fwafwow Bring your numbers in here from the .223 thread, it will make searching this stuff out easier in the future.

Does anyone have feedback on the 77 gr Frontier?

Next up in the rotation will be some ADI 69 gr SMK and probably some more Frontier to try. IMI isn't too bad at 86cpr, but would be nice to get bulk in the ~70-75cpr range if I can find something else this rifle likes. Staying in the heavier grain bullets (65+), we have lots of wind up here.

Federal Gold Medal Match .223 77 gr SMK 2394 fps, 79 fps ES, ~1.3 MOA 10 rd
BH .223 77 gr SMK 2525 fps, 98 fps ES, ~1.2 MOA 10 rd
BH 5.56 77 gr SMK 2681 fps, 73 fps ES ~1.2 MOA 10 rd

First 10 rds of new IMI 77 gr lot, 2" dot, more mirage than I'd like when I switched, will be checking it again tomorrow.

FWIW/FYI, here are some speeds from the range yesterday. 16.5" Tikka with TBAC Ultra 9:

• BH 77 TMK
  • 2733 fps (avg)
  • 61.1 spread
  • 21.3 SD
  • 2699 min, 2760 max
• ADI 69 SMK
  • 2759 fps (avg)
  • 106.1 spread
  • 24.6 SD
  • 2711 min, 2818 max

Also, the accuracy of the two was very close, with a slight edge to the Black Hills.

Works very well for me. My Ultra is a Gen 1. I also have the Magnus and keep meaning to compare them in the same range session.
