The moose and venison burgers were just the icing on the cake to an epic shooting day with some fantastic folks!
Speaking of guns that couldn't miss,
@hereinaz 6 Creed shooting factory 108 ELDMs had at least 5 shooters ringing a 2 MOA gong at 1,000 yards with multiple hits for each shooter. My 3rd shot ever behind that gun was an impact at 1,000 yards after some great wind call adjustments from
@NSI and
@hereinaz Both of my 22 Creeds in Rokstoks, with one shooting 88 ELDMs and one shooting 80 ELDXs also had multiple shooters hitting at 400-1,000 yards consistently.
@NSI 3rd ever shot from the prone position from my 22 Creed was an impact at 1,000 yards after a couple wind call corrections from me (which he could spot himself using the Rokstok and an unsuppressed 22 Creed).
@HighUintas and
@cal30_sniper grabbed the 22 Creed in the wood Rokstok and had first ever shot behind the gun impacts at 485 yards and took it out much further than that as well.
The Rokstoks were a hit and I left both a 223 and 260 Rem unsuppressed for folks to get a feel for how it manages the recoil.
@MuleyFever also swapped his 7PRC Tikka into a Rokstok and shot from both prone and seated positions. His feedback was that the gun didn't try to flip up on him as much and overall recoil and feel was able to be managed better. He has very large hands and was able to make the short trigger reach work just fine. Overall it was clear that a lot of folks have put into practice the things they've learned from hunting and on Rokslide. We had some elite level shooting from folks using their hunting guns in some not so easy shooting conditions between the winds and mirage.
The wind was consistent all day and made for a fun day of learning how to shoot consistently in wind, reading gusts/lulls, learning about potential shifts at target, compressing and funneling winds on knobs, using and learning local vegetation for clues, and just how important it truly is to be able to spot impacts through your scope to make corrections. Shooting heavy for caliber, high BC bullets out of 6mms and 22 Creedmoors in known/good guns/scopes is almost like cheating. Even in seemingly awkward positions like this one where
@hereinaz went 5 for 6 including 4 hits in a row at 1,000 yards.
Late afternoon and evening we did some fun timed drills and positional shooting, learning some tips from each other for awkward positions and rests. Everyone who tried the "challenge" drill was eventually able to make an impact on the "4,3,2,1 challenge". This is a challenge I do that simulates a hunting shot scenario and it's a ton of fun to practice from both prone and seated/kneeling positions. Shooters yesterday attempted both prone and seated/kneeling variants. The challenge is 400 yards, 3 shot attempts, 2 MOA target, and you have 1 minute to make an impact (4-3-2-1). Shooter starts with pack on, gear packed, scope dialed to zero, bolt closed with safety on and nothing in chamber, 3 rounds in magazine, as if you stalking an animal and have located one you want to kill. Timer starts and shooter attempts to make an impact.
Be on the lookout for more Rokslide rally point shooting days and come on out!
Huge thanks to
@hereinaz and
@NSI for helping me RO, run things, zero guns, and help users with any issues. Thanks to
@eddielasvegas for helping to get this event going and making sure we all stayed hydrated and happy! And to everyone who came to shoot, helped set targets, worked with each other on improving and learning, it was a heck of a day and I'm super impressed with the skills and abilities of active Rokslide members. Ya'll are some certified long range killers no doubt!
