I want to start out by saying I really appreciate this forum - without it I never would have understood the importance of a drop tested scope and would still have Leupold VX6HDs on all my rifles instead of the nightforces they currently wear. Also was drawn to the 223 thread and am totally on board with prioritizing bullet construction/performance over all else.

Having said that, what is up with constantly being attacked if you choose to shoot something other than a .22 or .243 caliber cartridge?

Or being told you don’t shoot enough or shouldn’t be hunting if you don’t hunt with a small caliber or want to buy a gunwerks rifle.

@mxgsfmdpx is one of the worst, but there are others who are just as bad. It reminds me of the long range hunting website and their obsession with sherman cartridges and hammer bullets.

I love my 223 and 6cm and shoot them a lot. Its crazy to me that someone who likes to take their 280 AI or 6.5 prc elk hunting because they appreciate the high bc bullets and their performance with wind is going to get ridiculed and told they don’t shoot enough and shouldn’t be hunting.

If an eldm in a 223 or 22 CM is awesome, isn’t an eldm in a 6.5 PRC just more of a good thing?

Anyway, its been interesting moving from a spectator to a participant and I am probably going to go back to spectating and hopefully find some good deals in the classifieds

I think this could be one the best hunting forum on the internet if a handful of people could tone it down. Thanks again for all those who have made positive contributions and comments. Not looking to stir things up, just wanted to share a humble observation from a nobody on the internet

Running numbers in ballistic apps instead of going out and actually shooting and learning is so common here it’s a daily post.

It’s not a bad thing to “run numbers” but to make strong claims like “1,000 yard killing ability” based on them isn’t correct. I see them all the time and just scroll past most of them. Sorry I didn’t do that with yours.

You can either learn from comments and go see what happens in the field with 1,000 yard hit rates or you can make a thread like this about it instead. Up to you.

Folks like to be experts online, they can ramble on with their "facts" with no face to face push back, I pass right over any of that BS and ignore most threads that start to go that route, though when you can care less about the topic it can be entertaining!

I do not own a rifle, other than a couple.22s and an AR platform, I bowhunt, but listen to some rifle and scope banter due to guiding some rifle hunters.

There are lots of folks on here that shoot calibers larger than .22 and 243, read their posts and interact with them and ignore the small caliber guys like @mxgsfmdpx . It's really that simple, and I am sure @mxgsfmdpx doesn't really care if you don't read his posts or not either lol.

If they bother you that bad there is always the "ignore" function as well, block them if you need to

Its a web site with a lot of members, to me one of best, and people have different opinions as well as different ways of expressing them. After being on here for a bit there's certain people I tend to follow and others I automatically dismiss. As you know, you just have to sort through what works for you and what doesn't.

Sorry you got your feelings hurt but you did post that you felt comfortable shooting an animal at long range with the bigger cartridges because you ran the numbers. You didn't indicate that you actually spent time shooting the cartridges side by side in hunting conditions and witnessed better hit rates with the larger of them. Mxgsfmdpx didnt attack you. He pointed out that running numbers doesnt translate to actual hits and he was making the point that in real conditions the cartridge is unlikely to be the difference between a hit or miss.

As one example of dozens of Rokslide personal face to face encounters for me…

Back in March we had a Rokslide members shooting day that I hosted in AZ, with around a dozen members coming out. Was a great time and nobody got their panties in a wad when told to shoot and learn. Also nobody was forced to shoot any gun they didn’t want to.

The conditions were tricky with consistent all day wind and blowing dust for pretty much the entire 10 hour shoot.

Since 1,000 yards got thrown out…. Between two guns at the “high BC” end (7PRC, 300 Win Mag) when compared side by side with the same shooters versus 6 Creedmoor and 22 Creedmoor. Which guns do you think had higher 1,000 yard hit rates?

Shoot what you want, when you want, at whatever animals you want is my motto. But make strong claims like “BC is what matters at 1,000 yards” and you risk being called out for what happens in real life versus online calculators.

To answer your question: no one says you have to use small calibers. I hunted with a 30-06 this year. No one gave me any crap about it.

We do tend to call out fallacies when people say they need a larger caliber.

If we only wait a little longer maybe RL26 will return our txt? To be honest even at $86 a pound RL23 is at least available and you know what they say, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. I hadn’t given up on RL22 when it went missing, so I’ll have to look up data for RL23.
