It’s discontinued? It’s still on the website?

I hunted with the xt ret this year and was quite happy with it (on NX8’s, though trying to figure out a way to justify a ATACR, thanks Form)

The 4-16x ATACR is not discontinued. The reason it isn’t “the one” for all around hunting is due to no reticle that is truly usable at low power with illumination and weight. Price is also a factor.

There’s a new company out of Alberta called Apex optics. I spoke to them today and they said drop testing will be a part of their QC process for optics in addition to shock testing, as zero retention is a priority over subjective qualities. They have a business model similar to Maven and will be coming out with a 4-20 scope with a hunting focused FFP reticle eventually. I have high hopes to say the least and the price point is excellent for the quality by all accounts.

I hope Form can get his hands on one, as these check a lot of boxes.

That’s promising. Maven seems to care and are small enough to make the necessary changes. I had the same hopes for Tract, but the jury is still out on them.

Forgive me if I've missed it mentioned in here, but the night force 4-16x42mm atacr seems to check a lot of the boxes for a long range hunting scope with locking elevation, capped windage, 4-16 zoom range.

What keeps this from being the go to? Price? Weight? Reticle?

Surely it passed your torture test?

I had one, and it’s downfall to me compared to the NXS 2.5-10 is the weight and 34mm tube vs 30mm tube. Mounting options for 34mm start to add weight too, though Talley and Hawkins have recently started to make that a non-factor.

If the nxs 2-10 had a cap on the windage I’d own one.

Form, for a hunting rifle would you recommend it or stick with NX8’s?

Banned member Ndbowhunter started a post at SH about dropping a scope 1x from waist height and shooting a 5 shot group to see if it retains zero. Says he’ll kick in a $50 gift to your choice of vendor after his kid picks a name out of a bowl from those that did the test. So far nobody has said they’d do it with their best warranty, bombproof, ultratracker $2000+ scopes.

That would be awesome, Tanya doesn't want me dropping her scope in the name of science.

Can concur, especially if it's a non illuminated one.

I thought I read a post from him here not too long ago. When and why did he get the boot?

Last post Dec 2020. He's referenced in the "How to get banned from Rokslide" thread. All I needed to know - as well as self-report myself for poking fun at 762G above. :)

However, good segue - I think ND also posted on the Hide that he'd seen zero shifts that he directly attributed to Sportsmatch rings. Would be interested to hear @Formidilosus's take on that, as well as if anyone else has done their drop-tests with Sportsmatch, seeing as so many of us have them ...

Must've been someplace different.

I'd, too, be interested to see more info on the Sportsmatch. Running a few sets myself.

Ive been told by NF that it has been replaced with the 4-20 ATACR. There is still inventory left, thats why one has the opportunity to buy them.

I’ve dropped multiple sets. Have not seen any issues.

An update on the scopes left outside. Was -10°’ish last night. Right at 0° this morning when checked. All were the same as they were at 10° except for the-

2). Sightron STAC 3-16x42mm: Mag ring now has a “zip” sound to it when turned quickly.

8). Vortex Razor HD LHT 4.5-22x50mm: Mag ring is now very easy to turn, strikingly so. Elevation turret is mush.

9). Vortex Viper PST Gen 1 2.5-10x32mm: Mag ring now has different feel in the zoom range. Part is only slightly stiff, but a portion is nearly locked up.

No change from yesterday on the scopes, except that I forgot to put-

7). Leupold MK5 3.6-18x44mm: Elevation lock no longer locks unless going slow to it/past it. If you just spin it back to zero, it goes past zero without locking.

The SHV F1 works without issues. The Trijicons generally do well, but I think we will get a 1-6x to eval. I agree that we need to do an eval on Swarovski Z3/5/6’s… however historically, they fail pretty quickly.
