Rifle build price check

I have a Remington 700 338 RUM. Cut the barrel to 21.25" and had the trigger adjusted by a local smith. Shoots slightly over MOA. I am thinking a full build. He wants $800 to replace the barrel, I'm thinking a Hart? Lap the lugs and true up the action. AG stock, 3 position safety, iron sights, Talley rings, bases. Talley reciever sight that mates to the base. Ceracoat, M16 extractor, thicker recoil lug. Total cost $3200. How does this rebarrel price seem as well as the total cost? John

You can do this all yourself and keep the Rem700 for something else if you can ignore the iron sights part

Bighorn Origin or Kelbly Atlas - $925
Prefit Barrel - $600ish (more depending on wants/needs)
Trigger Tech - $140 (no need for 3 positions)
AG Stock - $600ish (lots of options there...they will make sure it's inletted very closely to your action)
Talley Rings -$50
you'll need an action wrench and headspace gauges (possibly rent or borrow) $0-100
miscellaneous items TBD by your wants and needs
prices and tools required will vary

CAVEAT: it's not as simple as I make it seem but with some time doing research on parts and products it can be done. You can even do a Remage build too

Your smiths pricing seem pretty much par for the course. I’d check with Alamo Precison and see what their rates would be. They built my 280ai for right at 1k with me supplying most of the components. They do top notch work and are pretty reasonably priced.

Does the rebarrel price include the new barrel? If so then it’s on par, if not it’s really high.

Also look at carbon 6 barrels, if they can thread for your action and have the reamer for what you want, their chambered barrels come out under $700 and it’s cheap to have a barrel installed and head spaced, less then $100 usually.

If you buy a barrel blank, chambering and threading usually runs about $350.

$800 for a rebarrel seems high unless that is also including the action truing.

Depending on the barrel (Bartlein, Hart, Kreiger, Lilja, etc) $800 for cutting/threading/chambering/installing/cerakoting seems on par.

If going a lesser expensive barrel, $800 would be high.

Yes $800 includes action work. $3,200 out the door total price. I will look into the other option so far mentioned as well. I would prefer a local smith. I just got done dealing with a smith who was across the country and had good personal references, it was not a good experience. But sendimg the rifle out would not be a deal breaker either.
