A hunt was waiting just outside the back door, when squirrels and Sparrows were big game. When a magnifying glass could keeps you occupied for hours.
When the Farmers old ran down barn had the coolest hidden treasures, Owl, Rat and the occasional cat skeletons,

God those were the best days !
I remember me and the love of my life setting out on the back porch steps shooting my Crossman 760 pump
bb rifle. Man she was good !
There was a weed about 36/40 inches high I think it was a milkweed.. Oh well I shot about two inches off of the top, then she shot a couple more inches off, we reduced the weed down to a 1/2 nub in the dirt.
The only thing alive I could get her to shot were the Big ass spiders in the back of the house all thru the Honey suckle. They were the size of a quarter and splatted really good when you hit them. You know no matter how many of those things we shot there would be a whole new bunch of them the following day.
What are our Grand kids and Great grand kids going to do ? Can't make a go cart from a Barrowed rototiller motor and race it around the Block, No more Old barns to explore, Hell it is probably illegal to burn up ants with a magnifying glass?
So sad, just no honest trouble for a kid to get into with out destroying their future anymore.

I don’t consider myself old, but I remember those days very well. I grew up without a computer or game console and TV was a special treat. In fact I had never seen a house that had air conditioning until I was 15, and that was my first day working at an HVAC company.

Getting off the bus in 7th or 8th grade, walking down driveway, fixing a pb and j and drinking water out of the jug in the fridge that everyone drank from, then grabbing dad's marlin 30-30, jumping on an 1985 Honda TRX 125 and going a few miles down the road to go hunting. No way you could let your kid do that today even if they were responsible some one would turn you in for child endangerment.

Started at age 5 with my Daisy lever action BB gun. At 10 I was allowed to walk the 2 miles to get to the nearest place it was legal to hunt squirrels, dove and rabbit. Then at 12 riding my single speed bicycle with a double barrel shot gun on the handle bars and a .22 lever action on a sling on my back being a terror to every crow in the county.

You may just live in the wrong area. I see kids doing these things almost every day.

My kids do this. Neighborhood kids with pocket knives, the hot Christmas gift was a hatchet, they made a mouse graveyard complete with little wooden crosses, son made a working (kinda!) bow out of branches with and old arrow of mine, spent his allowance money on paracord to make a bow and a tarp shelter so he can go outside when it’s raining. Find a young kid to mentor and put that angsty energy to work!

The squirrel, rabbit, and pigeon populations in my neighborhood took a hit from my high school best friend and myself. This was the case even in my college days at Texas A&M, and we had a great marinade to make squirrel fajitas.

I also recall our duck hunting days riding bikes through the neighborhood at 4am with shotguns strapped across our handlebars and decoy bags on our backs.

Life was good...

When I was elk hunting last year, my kids threw the goose decoys and their shotguns in the back of an old golf cart and drove it threw the neighborhood to get to the field my buddy had permission on. My buddy laughed like crazy at them coming down the road to hunt with him using flashlights as headlights at O'dark thirty in the morning! No old barns here, but plenty of other stuff for them to do outside. There are still places for kids to be kids.

I rocked a 220 Bayou myself. Ran that thing like crazy!
We still have ours but it doesnt run anymore. I miss that thing. I think it was an 1988, horrible suspension but it was so light you could get them to go anywhere.

When it was part of the Gym/Sports class in High school to learn how to safely handle and shoot a shotgun and a 22.
We would line up behind the Gym building and fire into the woods, and the girls would complain that the shogun had too much kick.
It was a common sight to see guns on the racks in the rear windows, and the guys show off their hunting rifles in the parking lot after school, before heading out for the after school deer hunt.

Mine was probably a 94 or so. We traded it off in 1998 for a new Polaris Sportsman 335. That one is still going strong and makes a trip from the Midwest to Colorado every year

The coolest thing you could get was a wristwatch & a survival knife for Christmas. You know, the kind with the compass on the end of the handle & wire saw & fish hooks inside the handle.
