I’ve had a Remington 700 in 270 Win for a couple years. I love the gun and feel like it’s a tack-driver.

It’s a cheap model, but it’s been a good gun.

I was on the fence whether to mod it or get a 6.5 creedmoor. Ultimately I’ve decided to stick with the 270. Partially since this year is its centennial, partly because I can upgrade it slowly in steps rather than dropping money on a gun all at once.

I want to compete in the NRL Hunter, really the skills division, maybe the lightweight if I ever get good enough.
The first step for me was new glass.

I had a leupold VX-Freedom 3-9. Which I adore. Leupold stands as my favorite optics I’ve owned, although that’s the only Leupold I’ve owned so far.
I did just find a killer deal on an Athlon Cronus BTR Gen II 4.5-29.
The eye box seems less forgiving, but I’m excited to get to use it. Seems like great glass!

I feel like it’s mounted really far back, but it seems like that’s where the scope was the clearest. I may need to adjust…

This will serve as a journal of sorts to the updates I’ll be making to the good old 270.

I'd be shoving that scope forwards a bunch. Will letcha spread those rings out a bit more as well.

Kind of what I thought. I’m gonna have to mess with it a little bit to see cause this is what felt right but it doesn’t look right.

What it looks like doesnt matter.

What feels/works right is what matters.

However, after watching videos and reading quite a bit recently, i think many of us could use a re-evaluation of our "natural" shooting position. There are too many options out there for us to settle for fitting ourselves to the rifle, instead of fitting the rifle to us as we should. Did you set eye relief with the scope on 9x? Were you in a real shooting position when you set it?

I varied the zoom to try and verify it was the best position for me.
I wasn’t in a good position, I was able to re-evaluate it and scooter it forward. It may need some more fine tuning though

I'd set it on max power, and creep up on the stock about as much as possible. Set it up for that. Eating a scope sucks lol

Max power should be where the eyebox is smallest.

set it to max power and then get setup on the rifle in your most common shooting position with your eyes closed. once you are completely setup then open your eye/s.

Pay attention to how you have to move your head to find a clear picture; up = you need lower rings or a cheek riser, down = you need taller rings, forward = bring the scope closer, rearward = move the scope forward.

Do you have a one-piece rail or 2 individual rail sections? individual rail sections will limit the scope adjustment available to you so if you need more adjustment than is available, think about a one-piece rail.

Glad to see this. I'll be following along. I have also been thinking about getting a new rifle, but I have a .270 in the safe that shoots great and is a little sentimental. I have been thinking recently on just upgrading the 270 with a new stock and maybe glass and keeping it instead.

As a rule, I find that if you pull the bolt back to its max extended length then it's gonna within about a half inch of where the objective lens/bell needs to be positioned. Basic rule; to be moved as your eyes see fit.
Some cheap and easy upgrades are to bed the action lugs with JB Weld, upgrade the trigger, and make sure the barrel is free floated - i.e. the stock does not touch the barrel under any circumstances (especially when using a bipod).
Also, the further apart that your scope rings are the stronger and more secure they are.

Check your Athlon optic against the Optic Test thread to see if it is durable enough to be worthwhile for your usage. Also, don't forget to adjust the diopter to your eyes focus wise. If you don't know what that is there are 11,266 videos on YT on how to do it.
Feel free to DM if you have Q's

Step two complete.
Got the barrel threaded and suppressor mounted!

I believe that you have just discovered why people cut their barrels to somewhere between 16 and 20 inches when threading a barrel. The balancing just looks off now. That being said, whenever I see someone using a suppressor in Europe, they tend to leave the barrel full length. I’m not sure why. I too am a 270 fan, and I am excited to see how this turns out.

It is a long one for sure, but I don’t mind. I didn’t want to give up the barrel length. Maybe I’ll chop it later but I kinda doubt it.
