Anyone out there hunting with one of these? I inherited a late 70s .30-06 that I know had exactly 15 rounds down the barrel. Last two shots were two bucks at 200 & 250 yds. The wood is perfect & metal/gas port is clean. I know it’s not worth a lot, more of a sentimental value to me. It’s sad that I don’t see a scenario where it would replace any of my other rifles on a hunt. It’s a soft shooting gun. But the dang thing is just heavy & only deer-of-angle accurate.

Picked one up this year at a gun show in 308. Done see me using it a lot either, but would be good for hunting in a stand or for making drives.

I always heard the "jam o matic" horror stories but I used one in .308 doing govt. chronic wasting disease deer eradication and shot piles of rounds through it without a problem. It sat uncased in my truck and could always just grab & go, I learned to really like it, 3-9 scope and took deer at 200-300yrds regularly.

My 742 30-06 never had a jamming issue but it kicked like a mule, added a limbsaver and what a huge difference it made. My buddies 7400 270 was a jam-o-matic.

Have an uncle that had one "double-fire" and it blew the action all to hell right in his face. Literally the only thing that was salvageable was the rear stock and butt pad. He still has the gun to show people how lucky he is to be alive. Didn't even make a scratch on him. Very lucky.

My dad gave me one for my first deer rifle back in '72. I returned the favor when I got my first real job in '77. I used Ole' Reliable for 42 years and dumped a lot of deer along the way. I even took 2nd place in a 300 yd competition in El Paso when I was 19. Now I inherited dad's. I redid the stocks a few years ago and retired both to the safe. We ran em impeccably clean and dry. Never had a hiccup from either one.

I killed a pile a deer with my grandfathers 742 using 180gr winchester failsafe factory fodder. Never a problem.

I also killed my first deer with a 742 carbine with a 2-7 redfield on it close to 30 years ago! It was my grandpa’s gun, I still have it and would never get rid of it. It has never had a single problem with a jam and every time I go to sight it in it is dead on and ready to go!

I got my grandpa’s in .30-06 and it doesnt like to cycle. But its first shot is accurate at least. Left if with iron sights and Ive been told they self destruct within 1,000 rounds. So i got 900 more rounds to go roughly and hardly ever use it. Not worth selling so it just sits.

Killed a couple deer with my uncle’s .243. Everyone in our deer party shot one. I was the first to buy a bolt action and they all thought I was a lunatic. But, I’m the only one without a story about the gun jamming and the buck getting away.

That was my first deer rifle, killed quite a few bucks and pigs with it. I sold it years ago and wish I still had it sitting in my safe. I worked all summer long to buy that gun.

I have always wondered if a 3-D printed magazine would help reducing jamming.

My dad and brother had matching 742 Woodsman in 30-06. When my dad passed i got the gun. Later gave it to my brother so he would have the set. My dads got to where it would not cycle correctly. i took it to the gunsmith and it had an issue with Bolt and parts to fix it were non existent.
