After scoping and barrel break in process on a new Rem 700 Mountain Rifle in .270 Win., I started testing different loads. Tried Nosler Trophy Grade 150gr ABLR and 130gr AB, Swift 130gr Sciroco and Hornady Precision Hunter 145gr ELD-X. 100 yrd 5 shot groups were all around 2.5 in and 3.5 with the fliers. It was a windy day, but I'm pretty disappointed. Anyone have a load that this gun likes? Save the "shoulda bought a Tikka" comments, I already know.

I can't speak for the .270, but I have one in a .280 and it will do under 1 MOA at 100 yards all day long. I can't get it much under, but with that rifle I can't ask for much more.

I had a .280 Remington in a 700 MTN rifle and it shot really well. One thing on the light rifles like this I found that it's critical to keep the same hold and pressure on the rifle the same for every shot if you want to have good groups. You need to be really consistent on how you hold the rifle and do it the same every shot. With the light barrels it's also important to wait between shots and don't get the barrel hot. Try working on that.

I would suggest trying 130 gr. Partitions or Accubonds if you reload or in factory ammo. Hard to beat H4831SC in the .270. That's what I loaded for a friend. 59.0 grs. of H4831SC using Winchester brass and Federal 215 Large rifle magnum primers.

Was prone on bags using scope hold with offhand. Shot all 5 shots in a string. I'll try barrel cool period next time.

Never understood why the scope hold when shooting. I wouldn't give up. Try a good front rest and rear bags. mtmuley

I forgot to mention; I fully floated the barrel on mine also. That shrunk the groups considerably.

I think the theory is reduction of muzzle jump. I'm no expert

I have a .280 Mountain Rifle that shoots better than I do. I don't like the scope hold. Try two bags, front and rear, use a good trigger hand grip and place your off hand on top of your holding hand. I've not been able to get great groups with AB's. Stick with the Partitions. H4831SC is my favorite powder for that caliber.

Don't do it. You aren't going to reduce muzzle jump in any amount to be beneficial. Just an artificial effect on the rifle you don't need to deal with. mtmuley

As a follow up, the Federal Partitions shoot very well. The trick is keeping the barrel cool. 2 shots is the max before waiting a few minutes or else the groups open up substantially.

I wait 2 minutes between shots, longer if it is hot out, like during the summer.

Your hunting shots are (hopefully all) going to be cold bore shots, so shooting with a heated up barrel will lead you down the wrong path.

jolemons,
My 700 Mt. Rifle is chambered in .280 Remington. Very particular on ammo. Like Sekora I had the barrel free-floated and pillar bedded be for I got any notable accuracy. The rifle will string high or high-right when heated up, but holds a group for 3-4 shots. Really likes "heavy-for-the caliber loads. Will not shoot a 140 grain anything! Have gotten tight groups with 160 Grain Accubonds once loaded by Federal. Need to reload at some point going forward.

My brother has a Mt Rifle in .270
It has not been to finicky and he doesn't reload. Great performance out of his with the Hornday SUPERFORMANCE SST ammo in 140GR

I know this is an old thread. Has anyone tried the Federal Terminal Ascent 136 grain out of the Rem model 700 .270 Win mountain rifle?

If so:
-How far have you shot and results?
-Do you have another recommendation for factory load for long range shooting out of this gun specifically, say out to 500 yards?
-Obviously I read the thread and will be trying the federal partitions and see a recommendation for Hornday SUPERFORMANCE SST ammo in 140GR.

My goal is accuracy with minimal drop out to 500 yards. I’ll be using this gun on my first mule deer hunt and deciding what to try for ammo before I start practicing. Can get awful expensive to by trying numerous different loads these days.

Thanks fellow Roksliders!
