I am taking my son to region 7 on a mule deer hunt. I wanted to see what your thoughts are on how the elk population is around *********. Would be getting him a cow tag.

Check the regs before you purchase. Pretty sure cow tags can only be filled on private, blm or state land.

I antelope hunt in the Broadus area in august and almost never see any elk in that vicinity

If you’re going to timbered or river bottom areas get one. Good jag of elk around Ashland I assume they get pushed around a lot in rifle

If you have access to private lands along the powder or tongue river it could offer some decent hunting depending on the surrounding pressure. The state and blm parcels get over ran with hunters and will likely be devoid of elk.

Hunting on the forest service for elk is a limited permit. So you know deer numbers are pretty low in that area so I wouldn’t be too picky.
