Reduce the chance of getting scammed

Do they use words not commonly used. Think to yourself. Does the average person speak like this? In 32 years, I have never had someone ask me to “kindly send them money” that was legitimate.
If you scroll your junk mail, I see this ALL THE TIME. I get messages claiming to be from different credit card companies asking me to "kindly" reply to the offers. The word "kindly" is a direct indication its a scam.

While were talking about scammers - fun fact. Did you know that the bad grammar and misspellings in the old "Nigerian prince" emails were intentional? To make a long story short, the scammers figured out that if someone kept responding to those emails they were far more likely to follow through with sending them money vs. people responding to perfect grammar who wouldn't fall for it.

I had an instance (not on here) where I had a WTB thread on 2 or 3 different waterfowl forums for a particular type of boat

Had similar response from 3 different user names almost instantaneous. At first I thought guy just didn’t get his user name choice , but then the pics were all the exact same one on google main page.

I figured something was up and sellers would only ship .. I couldn’t come inspect the boat.

Did get lucky and found a retired Marine that was moving from commiefornia to back to Alabama and didn’t have use for it . Good shape and gave me a good price

Going to pop this back up to the top.

The latest and greatest is the text scams. You post saying you will take something and you get a text from the member with payment information. It is most likely not the person you are intending to buy the item from. If you have posted your phone number on the open forum, anyone can find it.

Go search your name and your phone number and delete it if you have ever posted it. It could be from 10 years ago.
People stop posting your information for the world to see.

All I had to do to find about 10 members phone numbers in 2 minutes was search the word TEXT in the classifieds. I am not a scammer, its not my job and I found them that easy.

@CorbLand thanks for posting up the search instructions. Two things I want to add to that is for people to also search the last four of your number. The system doesn’t populate for multiple formats of your whole number but will pick a specific number set out of your comments. For example searching “111-333-7777” won’t pull it up if you originally typed it as “(111)-333-7777” but searching “7777” will show up no matter what.
Secondly for anyone who did this prior to the recent site update, do it again. I noticed that the search feature now shows comments you typed on someone’s profile and private messages where it used to only search the public forums.

Also, sometimes people try masking their number by doing some of the digits as words not numbers. I would suggest searching "text" and "call" along with different variations of your number.

Nobody should be able to see your direct messages, so posting it in there is fine. Posting it in a thread or on a members page is not a good idea.

Thanks for the reply
While I have no experience with them….
I was planning on using them as a stationary “overpant” while glassing. ie after a hike/climb to a glassing position, zip them over my attack pants and put my puffy coat on and get to glassing. Easy on easy off right over my pants.
Are you using them as a primary pant? They seem like they mite be pretty fragile for that

Well that sucks, how do we get ride of numbers in a PM?

Also, how do we vet scammers via phone call etc. without placing a number anywhere in the forums?

Oh , I guess i misread the post.

". I noticed that the search feature now shows comments you typed on someone’s profile and private messages where it used to only search the public forums"

Thx

I should let a mod confirm this but in all the searching I have done, I have not found anything in a PM from someone I wasn’t PMing. I would highly doubt that anyone can find them, though.

If you want to PM me your number, I can search it and see if it will pull up your conversations with anyone else.

Correct, only those in the pm can see it.

Bumping this, as we still have scumbag scammers trying to rip off our members-daily. For those that report them, thank you. As another mod stated in a thread I can't find.....give details in the report! What and why are they a scammer?
We aggressively pursue all scammers

I wish this was around when I started here! Great info! Luckily Im OCD and havent been burned yet but it was nerve-racking at first...knowing that this was an honor based site. I started asking for copy of DL with them in the pic and pic of them with the item.
I also like getting a sellers phone # so I can Google it and see if it lines up with what they're telling me or is posted on their bio. This has failed me once before, though. The cell # pulled up a different name but the guy was legit...not sure why.

I ran into a scammer recently on another forum. He said it was his "friends" tripod and gave me a phone number with +1 in front 🤣

Be diligent out there, guys! Watch your back, nobody else is...Rokslide is doing their part. Thanks for that!

If guys need help verifying anyone, hit me up. I can pull phone numbers, names etc. and tell you immediately if they're legit.

Criminal record and places of residence will also show, good way to make sure the guy is who he says he is. I do this on darn near every transaction on here. Perks of the job.

Do not under any circumstance provide a random stranger on the internet with a picture of your driver license.
